SERENADE (aka "Moonlight Serenade") As recorded by Mario Lanza for the 1954 film "The Student Prince" (Sigmund Romberg / Dorothy Donnelly / Nicholas Brodszky / Paul Francis Webster) Overhead, the moon is beaming White as blossoms on the bough Nothing is heard but the song of a bird Filling all the air with dreaming Could I hear this song forever Calling to my heart anew, my Darling While I drift along forever Lost in a dream of you I hear your voice in the wind that stirs the willows I see your face in the stars that shine above (Hold me closer, tonight we love) The willows bending, the stars that shine The shore lights blending, they're yours and mine Drifting along, in my heart there's a song And the song in my heart will not fade Oh, hear my serenade, my moonlight serenade (Love me) Overhead, the moon is beaming White as blossoms on the bough Nothing is heard but the song of a bird Filling all the air with dreaming Could this beauty last forever I would ask for nothing more, believe me Let this night but live forever Forever and ever more. / - 1924 Howard Marsh (Broadway Production) - 1943 Frank Hornaday, Roy Barnes, Daniel De Paolo, James Wharton & Chorus (Broadway Revival) -1943 Roy Barnes &Chorus(Broadway Revival) -1947 Nelson Eddy & Rise Stevens -1948 Glenn Burris -1950 Lauritz Melchior & Male Chorus -1951 Earl Wrightson -1952 Mario Lanza (Film Soundtrack) -1952 Robert Rounseville -1953 Gordon McRae -1954 Mario Lanza -1959 Percy Faith & His Orch. Risë Stevens Earl Wrightson Straus 1941 1955
(http•••) Act I, Chap 4 - My Hero From: The Chocolate Soldier 4549 Opera legend and film star Risë Stevens leads a magnificent cast in this 1955 television production, produced and directed by Max Liebman. Based on George Bernard Shaw's "Arms and the Man," The Chocolate Soldier is one of the most popular operettas of all time; on Broadway alone, it received seven productions over a period of 40 years. Stevens is partnered by the delightful musical comedy star Eddie Albert, and the cast also features the beloved baritone Earl Wrightson and the popular character actor Akim Tamiroff. Interestingly, Risë Stevens made her Hollywood debut in a 1941 film version of The Chocolate Soldier that employed much of Straus' score, but followed a completely different storyline. Liebman's television production restores the original plot and characters, and faithfully conveys the romance and good humor of the Viennese operetta tradition.
