Urmas Sisask Grieg Heiden Siebert Lammert Borchert 1960 2008
“The Sombrero Galaxy” by Urmas Sisask is performed by the Grieg Pianoduo, with astronomical images selected by Peter Barthel. The Sombrero Galaxy for piano 4-hands is opus 119 of the Estonian composer and amateur-astronomer Urmas Sisask, who was born in 1960. This 2008 composition was commissioned by the Grieg Pianoduo, Elles van der Heiden and Siebert Nix, and astronomy professor Peter Barthel, in The Netherlands. The composer’s inspiration was triggered by a beautiful image of the Sombrero Galaxy by Barthel and his colleague Mark Neeser, obtained with Antu, one of the 8-meter telescopes of ESO’s Very Large Telescope in Chile*. The galaxy, with formal name Messier104, is located in the Virgo constellation, and has a distance of about 30 million light years from us. Its nearly side-on appearance recalls a Mexican Sombrero hat. Together with other astro-music compositions of Sisask, The Sombrero Galaxy forms part of the Keys-to-the-Stars concerts, in which the astronomer “accompanies” the live pianoduo performances with astronomical video, on a big screen behind the piano. In his piano compositions, Sisask occasionally demands unusual techniques such as muting strings, playing clusters, and glissandi directly on the strings. Also this studio performance of The Sombrero Galaxy by the Grieg Pianoduo combines the piano music with astronomical images. Towards the end of the composition, two fragments of the children’s song Madis appear. The sheet music of The Sombrero Galaxy was published by Edition49, in Karlsruhe. The support of music editor Boris Björn Bagger is gratefully acknowledged. Filming and post-production was carried out in the studio of MY Facilities in Groningen, The Netherlands, by Lammert Jan Broekema, Rutger Dekens, and Bas Tempelman.
