Charles Panzéra Maurice Ravel Baillot 1952
Here is the Swiss baritone Charles Panzéra with his wife Magdeleine Panzéra-Baillot performing Maurice Ravel's "Cinq mélodies populaires Grecques" from a Mercury recording, 1952. It is a rare treat to hear this great artist at a later stage in life from the majority of his records. Here is a link to all of my Charles Panzéra videos: (http•••)
Charles Panzéra Duparc Jean Fournet Fernande Decruck Gravier Barrière 1947
Duparc's setting of the Prudhomme text recorded by Panzéra in 1947. Jean Fournet is the conductor. The orchestration is by Fernande Decruck. "Toss, good horse, your flying mane, let the air around us be filled with sound; let me hear crunching under your clamorous hoof, the stones of the brooks and the bramble of the woods. With the steam of your flanks mingle your hot breath; with the flashing of your hooves your foam and your blood. Race like the eagle as it skims over the plain; Thrash the ground with your sonorous, quivering flight. Let us away! Young men, away, away— the ancient chief of the tribe calls to his horsemen; and the sons of the desert are thirsting for plunder, the horses mad with the air they have drunk. Swim thus in space, O my speedy horse. Steep me in pure air; bathe me in the wind. The stirrup beats your flank, and I have loosened the bridle. My body, scarcely touching you, flies in your wake. Crush everything—the bush, the gate or the branch; streams, ditches, slopes—clear all at a single bound. Race, I dream, and with closed eyes I bend over you. Bear me, bear me away into the great unknown!"
Charles Panzéra Debussy Jean Fournet Louis Beydts Pierre Bernac 1947 1952
From Debussy's Fêtes galantes II, a setting of the Verlaine text recorded by Panzéra in 1947. Jean Fournet is the conductor. The orchestration is by Louis Beydts. Here's a link to him singing the song with piano accompaniment from a 1952 recording: (http•••) And a link to my Charles Panzéra playlist: (http•••) Dans le vieux parc solitaire et glacé In the old solitary and frozen park Deux formes ont tout à l'heure passé. Two forms recently passed by. Leurs yeux sont morts et leur lèvres sont molles, Their eyes are dead and their lips are slack, Et l'on entend à peine leurs paroles. And one can barely hear their words. Dans le vieux parc solitaire et glacé In the old solitary and frozen park Deux spectres ont évoqué le passé. Two spectres evoked the past. — Te souvient-il de notre extase ancienne? “Do you remember our ecstasy of long ago?” — Pourquoi voulez-vous donc qu'il m'en souvienne? “Why would you want me to remember it?” — Ton coeur bât-il toujours à mon seul nom? “Does your heart still beat at [the sound of] my very name?” Toujours vois-tu mon âme en rêve? — Non. “Do you still see my soul in a dream?” — “No.” Ah! Les beaux jours de bonheur indicible “Ah those lovely days of unutterable happiness,” Où nous joignions nos bouches! — C’est possible. “when we joined our mouths” — “Possibly.” — Qu'il était bleu, le ciel, et grand l'espoir! “How blue was the sky; and how great was hope!” — L'espoir a fui, vaincu, vers le ciel noir. “Hope has fled, vanquished, toward the dark sky.” Tels ils marchaient dans les avoines folles, Thus they walked through the waving grainfields, Et la nuit seule entendit leurs paroles. And only the night heard their words. "This is the kind of song one can work on for a lifetime..." / Pierre Bernac
