William Lawes Albert Folop Suzuki 1602 1645 1915
William Lawes +••.••(...)): Ayre #1 For Three Viols (VdGS No.320) This air for two treble viols and one bass viol was written by William Lawes, an English early baroque composer. Lawes spent his entire adult life as a court musician to Charles I, and was eventually killed during the English Civil War at the battle of Rowton Heath in 1645. On his death, the king honoured him as "The Father of Musick". This ayre is from Lawes' suites for a consort of three viols. My recording follows the edition by Albert Folop at IMSLP: (http•••) I have played this tune on two mandolins and a mandocello / the bass line is very resonant and is fun to play on mandocello. Jacques Arcadelt +••.••(...)): D'un extrême regret mortellement attainte This is a somewhat obscure madrigal by one of the most influential madrigal composers of the 16th century. My arrangement for mandolin quartet (two nylgut-strung mandolins, tenor guitar and mandocello) is based on an arrangement for viols by Albert Folop, at IMSLP: (http•••) "Baroq-ulele" nylgut-strung mandolin (x2) Ozark tenor guitar Suzuki MC-815 mandocello
John Dunstable Albert Folop 1390 1453
This is a religious song, or "Motet", written by the late medieval/early renaissance English composer John Dunstable +••.••(...)). The full title is "Quam pulchra es et quam decora". I have recorded this as an instrumental trio, based on an arrangement for three viols (treble, tenor and bass) by Albert Folop from the IMSLP archive. The instruments are: Treble: "Baroq-ulele" bowlback ukulele/mandolin/soprano lute (GDAE tuning) Tenor: Ozark tenor guitar Bass: Troubadour Lionheart bouzouki This is a popular vocal piece, and usually performed somewhat slower than my recording, the tempo of which was governed by the limited sustain of plucked string instruments.
