Fortitude was written for clarinet, viola and cello in January 2015 for Sinfonia Newydd & Artes Mundi 6 project, an international visual arts exhibition organised by the National Museum of Wales, Cardiff. In this project, I was paired with a piece of visual art called GenXX by Sanja Iveković. This piece was a collection of six big black and white posters of professional models, but with the words of the charges and the execution dates of young female antifascist militants in Croatia during World War II. After realising that the theme of the art was to bear witness to the continued hidden violence against women, I put a narrative element of female militants in the structure. This narrative element starts from the rise of heroines and then moves on to the aggressive movement of their last fight against society. To relate with Ivekovic’s theme, I ended the story with the feeling of helplessness and sadness. Following this direction, I chose a ternary form, with the music becoming more aggressive towards the middle section and ending with a hollow sound and a feeling of emptiness. To express the strength of the heroines’ emotions, many sudden changes of articulation were indicated to create quite a brutal timbre. Recording/ Duration: 10’ 26” The recording comes from the performance at Turner House Gallery at Penarth on 12th of February 2015. It was performed by the members of Sinfonia Newydd. The portable recorder was set in front of the performers and a final editing to control the volume was done with Protool Software. The notated score was finished before the recording.
