ZELMIRA Opera seria in 2 atti Composer: Gioachino Rossini (1792–1868) Libretto: Andrea Leone Tottola, after Dormont de Belloy’s play ‘Zelmire’ (1762) SETTING: Lesbos, after the Trojan Wars PLOT: Zelmira is the daughter of Polidoro, king of Lesbos, who was overthrown by Azor, tyrant of Mytilene, while her husband Ilo, prince of Troy, was fighting in the Trojan Wars. Azor thought he had murdered Polidoro, but Zelmira is keeping him safe in the royal mausoleum. Antenore has murdered Azor and, with Leucippo’s help, hopes to frame Zelmira for Azor and Polidoro’s deaths and seize the throne. Ilo returns, and believes Antenore’s story. Antenore is crowned King of Lesbos. Zelmira stops Leucippo from murdering Ilo, but, found holding the dagger, is accused of trying to assassinate her husband and is imprisoned. Leucippo discovers that Polidoro is alive. He and Antenore trick her into revealing her father’s hiding place and capture Zelmira and Polidoro. Ilo learns the truth from Emma, and rescues the old king and his daughter. Performed unfinished at St. Peter's in Salzburg on October 26, 1783. Completed by Robert Levin using 5 of the 6 fragments KV 417B and 2 numbers from Davidde Penitente KV 469. Mozart indeed re-used the music of the mass to compose the cantata Davidde Penitente in 1785, except for 2 arias. In a reverse borrowing process, Pr. Levin used these 2 "newly" composed arias to complete the mass.
