Gianluigi Gelmetti, il celebre direttore italiano che è stato direttore principale e direttore artistico della Sydney Symphony Orchestra dal 2004 al 2008, è morto a Montecarlo all'età di 75 anni. Nato a Roma nel 1945 da padre pianista e madre poetessa, Gelmetti ha studiato presso la famosa Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia. Fu lì, all'età di 16 anni, che Sergiu Celibidache vide qualcosa nel giovane Gelmetti e gli lasciò condurre una prova orchestrale. Quell'audizione informale deve essere andata bene, perché Celibidache è diventato il suo insegnante poco dopo. Gelmetti ha poi debuttato con l'Orchestra Filarmonica di Berlino e dal 1989 al 1998 è stato Direttore Principale dell'Orchestra Sinfonica della Radio di Stoccarda e del Festival di Schwetzingen. Gelmetti è meglio conosciuto per il suo periodo come Direttore Musicale e Artistico del Teatro dell'Opera di Roma, dal 2000 al 2009, dove ha difeso opere meno conosciute e dimenticate tra cui le prime mondiali di Marie Victoire di Ottorino Respighi scritte nel 1914 ma mai interpretato e Marilyn di Lorenzo Ferrero; La fiamma di Respighi; Sakuntala di Franco Alfano; e Iris di Pietro Mascagni. Dal 2012 al 2016 è stato Direttore Principale dell'Orchestra Philharmonique de Monte-Carlo. È stato anche un appuntamento fisso al Rossini Opera Festival di Pesaro, in Italia, dove ha diretto una prima mondiale della versione inedita di Guglielmo Tell di cinque ore. Lascia una ricca eredità di registrazioni, incluse pubblicazioni su EMI, Sony, Naxos e Decca. Non sorprende che Rossini sia molto presente, tra cui registrazioni molto apprezzate di Zelmira e Eduardo e Cristina, nonché versioni filmate di Un ballo in maschera, La forza del destino e il celebre Il barbiere di Siviglia con Juan Diego Flórez e Ruggero Raimondi. WEXFORD FACTORY: Introducing lyric soprano Jade Phoenix, the 9th member of the Wexford Factory. Jade is in her 4th year in the Royal Irish Academy of Music (RIAM) studying with Prof. Mary Brennan and Dr. Dearbhla Collins. Jade will begin her Masters this September at the Guildhall school of Music and Drama in London, where she was awarded a scholarship to study with Yvonne Kenny. In 2017 Jade received three ESB FeisCeoil singing competition awards; Vincent O’Brien Memorial Cup, Soprano solo cup and the overall female final Margret-Burke Sheridan Cup. She later won the Dennis O'Sullivan medals and was a finalist in the Gervase Elwes memorial cup at the 2019 ESB FeisCeoil singing Competition. During her training at the RIAM she has worked with fantastic coaches such as David Adams, Andrew Synnott, Dame Ann Murray and Brenda Hurley. in 2019, Jade was cast in her first principal role in the Irish premiere of the contemporary opera 'Banished' by Stephen McNeff, performed in Kilmaiham Goal in 2019. The WEXFORD FACTORY is a professional development academy for young Irish / Irish-based singers, which will take place in September 2020. There were more than 50 applicants for the coveted 12 places. The video footage was recorded at their audition earlier in the year. This new professional development initiative, established for the first time this year by WFO Artistic Director, Rosetta Cucchi, is designed to mentor young singers through masterclasses led by internationally recognised artists and professionals. Guest tutors will include world-renowned tenor Juan Diego-Flórez, Irish soprano Celine Byrne, as well as Ernesto Palacio of the Rossini Opera Festival and Dmitry Vdovin, head of the Bolshoi’s Young Artist programme. Veteran Wexford Festival Opera director Roberto Recchia, Classical Music journalist Michael Dervan, movement specialist Sara Catellani and Rosetta Cucchi will also provide instruction. Currently based in New York, Kathleen studied music at the Boston Conservatory of Music and received her masters at the Mannes School of Music. She has performed with Utopia Opera as well as in productions of 'Die Zauberflöte', 'The Telephone', 'Carmen' and 'Hansel und Gretel'. The WEXFORD FACTORY is a professional development academy for young Irish / Irish-based singers, which will take place in September 2020. There were more than 50 applicants for the coveted 12 places. The video footage was recorded at their audition earlier in the year.
