Maurice Ravel Joburg Theatre Soweto Gospel Choir
Joburg Theatre and Vuyani Dance Theatre present Gregory Maqoma’s Cion - Requiem of Ravel’s Boléro accompanied by the Soweto Gospel Choir. With his contemporary African dance company, Gregory Maqoma shares an innovative, visually stunning, full-length work that brings literature to life. For this gala season at The Mandela at Joburg Theatre, the production will see 20 dancers and 16 musicians on stage in an amplified production. In Cion: Requiem of Ravel’s Boléro, Maqoma draws inspiration from creations by two artists: the character Toloki in South African author Zakes Mda’s novel Cion, and music from French composer Maurice Ravel’s Boléro. A ONE NIGHT ONLY musical celebration THE PRODIGAL MAN: the songs he sang, the music he wrote and the stories untold is a musical showcase that celebrates the life and work of Lungile Michael Themba. This time he leads a dynamic cast of ten seasoned performers in a Musical Theatre Revue that is intended to uplift, inspire and make contributions to the Musical Theatre sphere within an African narrative – marking his official return to the theatre stage after four and a half years. Lungile and company will be performing songs from some of Broadway’s greatest composers such as Jason Robert Brown, Henry Krieger and, the godfather of Musical Theatre, Stephen Sondheim. With an emotional connection to music and the innate ability to compose, score, and musically direct, the cast will also be performing a selection of Lungile Michael Themba’s original compositions that cater to the South African ear. This will be a musical and spiritual experience not to be missed! Lungile musically directed Tshwane University of Technology’s 2012 production of Sarafina: in Black and White, directed by Josias “Dos” Moleele. In just under a year in professional theatre, he appeared as supporting lead in Starlight Express at the Joburg Theatre’s Mandela stage and the Market Theatre’s electrifying production of The Colored Museum directed by James Ngcobo on the John Kani stage. He played the title role of Janice Honeyman’s 2014 production of Peter Pan and was subsequently nominated for a Naledi Theatre Award for Best Newcomer. In 2015, he was named one of Mail & Guardian’s Top 200 Young South Africans. In 2016, he produced musical material for Milked Voice, a Standard Bank Ovation Award winning new play that toured the then Grahamstown National Arts Festival, Soweto Theatre as well as the Joburg Lesedi Theatre. In 2018 he collaborated with Lebo Toko to produce work for ‘TOWN (Motown meet Sophiatown), an original Musical Theatre Revue.
