A hidden gem of romantic organ repertoire. The fugue theme appears in the prelude as a melodic foil to the prelude's flowing eighth notes. By the time the fugue starts, it sounds like a natural harmonic and thematic resolution to the unresolved V7 chord on which the prelude concludes. Samuel Prowse Warren was born in Montreal, did further study in Germany, and worked in the United States after returning from Europe. He was a prolific recitalist and was one of the founders of the American Guild of Organists. Samuel Prowse was the son of the famed organ builder Samuel Russell Warren. This recording is on the Organ of St. James Cathedral, Toronto which still contains some Warren pipework of 1888, although much of the instrument has been significantly altered since that time.
