Anne Lise Berntsen Mahler Messer 1943 2012
From Lieder eines Fahrenden Gesellen. This was the encore from the concert. Anne-Lise Berntsen +••.••(...)) was one of the leading dramatic sopranos in Scandinavia in the 80s and 90s.
This one, also called Laudes Creaturarum ("Canticle of the Creatures"), is a poem by Saint Francis himself. He praises God and thanks Him for His creatures, who share this existence with us. Saint Francis is said to be a well-known friend of nature, through which he understood God's grace and creative power. The last stanzas are said to have been added by Brothers Leo and Angelo, his two trusty human companions, who sung it for the first time in his deathbed, in a small cottage built to him by Saint Clare and the Sisters who would follow him. My father passed away over a month ago on Saint Francis' hospital. Intercede on his and our behalf, Saint Francis, friend of God! Lyrics, as sung in this adapted version of the original by the Choir of the diocese of Rome: Altissimo, onnipotente bon Signore, Tue so' le laude, la gloria e l'honore et onne benedictione.
