Maria Kurenko Rossini Bolshoi Theatre Kyiv Opera 1890 1914 1918 1922 1925 1927 1980
The delightful Maria Kurenko sings 'Una voce poco fa,' recorded in New York on 15 April 1927. Maria Kurenko was born Maria Kurenkova in Tomsk, Russia, on 14 January 1890 and died in New York on 17 May 1980. She studied at the Moscow Conservatory under Umberto Masetti. She made her operatic debut in 1914. From 1918 to 1922, she was a soloist at the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow, and in 1922-3 at the Kyiv Opera. She left Russia after the Revolution, going on a concert tour of Europe. In 1925, she was invited to tour the United States, where she remained. Although she sang in opera, her US career was mainly as a concert singerand she gave numerous recitals. She also taught. I transferred this side from Australian Columbia 04068. The disc appears to have suffered some heat damage at some stage, but I've done my best to minimise the impact of this.
