Miliza Elizabeth Korjus (18. august 1909 Varssavi / 26. august 1980 Culver City California) oli eesti-poola päritolu laulja (koloratuursopran) ja näitleja. Aastal 1938 kandideeris ta Carla Donneri rolliga filmis "Suur valss" Oscarile. Miliza Elizabeth Korjus (18 August 1909 - 26 August 1980) was a estonian coloratura soprano opera singer, who later appeared in Hollywood films. Miliza Elizabeth Korjus war eine US-estnische-amerikanische Film- und Theaterschauspielerin sowie Opernsängerin estnischer-polnischer Herkunft. / MILIZA KORJUS Miliza Korjus's father was Arthur Korjus, an Estonian lieutenant colonel in the Imperial Russian Army and later Chief of Staff to the War Minister of Estland. Her mother was Anna Gintowt, who was descended from Lithuanian-Polish nobility. Miliza was born in Warsaw, Poland (then part of the Russian Empire) during her father's military posting there in 1909. She grew up in a musical family: the father played the violin, and the brother the piano. Miliza and her sister sang duets, while the father and brother provided for the accompaniment. Miliza loved dancing and dreamt of a ballerina's career. In the course of time, however, she decided in favour of singing. Years of intense studies followed, first in Kiev and later in Tallinn, under the guidance of the well-known teacher Varvara Malama. After her marriage, Miliza Korjus moved to Magdeburg where she continued her studies. On her visit to Estland in 1932-1933 she gave a number of recitals in Tallinn, Tartu and Narva, performing an extencive programme. Miliza Korjus' daughter Melissa F. Wells was born in Estland in 1932 (Melissa F. Wells was for over forty years a career member of the US foreign service. Notably, she served as US Ambassador to Estland between 1998-2001). In the following years Miliza Korjus sang at the Staatsoper in Berlin. Here, one after another, her most important parts saw the ramp lights: the Night Queen, Lucia, Rosina, etc. At the same time, her first sound record was issued / the „Spring Voices" by J. Strauss. Thanks to her successful opera debut, and even more to a particulary well-received solo concert in the Beethoven Hall in Berlin, the name of Miliza Korjus acquired a wide renown. She performed in various music centres of Europe, and critics spoke of her as a promising artist of extraordinary vocal abilities and a masterful technique. She was compared to A. Galli-Curci, E. Sack and M. Ivogün. The Metro Goldwyn mayer Company invited Miliza Korjus to play the leading part in the production of „The Great Waltz" dedicated to the music of J. Strauss. The film came out in 1938, and Miliza Korjus became world-famous. The next film, „The Student from Praque", followed immediately, and Miliza Korjus, together with her partner Richard Tauber triumphed once again. In 1941-1944 Miliza Korjus lived in Mexico, and there she acted in the film „The Knight of the Empire". On her return to the U.S.A. in 1944, Miliza Korjus gave concerts in the Carnegie Hall, the most capacious concert hall of New York, and later in other towns of the U.S.A., as well as in Canada and Australia. Demand for her records surpassed all expectations. The firms „His Master's Voice" and the RCA „Victor" recorded almost all of the best-known coloratura parts in the performance of Miliza Korjus. The recordings of Miliza Korjus's voice are of a singular artistic value. They revive the warm and colorful voice of one of the most brilliant singers of the 1930s and 1940s, enabling us to enjoy its magic qualities, the singer's perfect intonation and, above all, her superb vocal technique. / Copyright Disclaimer: Copyright Disclaimer Under Section 107 of the Copyright Act of 1976, allowance is made for "fair use" for purposes such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching, scholarship, and research.
