Roy Agnew +••.••(...)) - Sonata Ballade (1938) Edward Neeman, piano (2009) The Sonata Ballade is the fifth of Roy Agnew's 6 surviving piano sonatas. The piece is in one movement and typically lasts around 9 minutes. "The Sonata Ballade was written in January of 1938 and dedicated to the composer and pianist Frank Hutchens. Agnew finished it in time to enter the Sesquicentenary Competition run by the NSW Music Association, a competition in which he won two prizes, one for this sonata and one for his Cradle Song. The prize included publication and, until very recently, one could purchase the score through the office of the self-same Association. The compositional technique is here further refined: we now have two themes, as in a classical sonata, and Agnew constantly develops these two ideas, using interval manipulation in a quite complex manner. The work is intensely dramatic. I recall playing it for Egon Petri, who liked it very much and said that it sounded like a cross between Scriabin and Ireland; quite an accurate summation of the sound world of the piece. Petri, a great master pianist and Busoni's favorite disciple, was a very fine Liszt player and instinctively felt drawn to those aspects of Agnew which derived from lat Liszt and Busoni. His summation also suggested to me recognition of Agnew's internationalism. Examining the two themes in question, the first [0:02] is heard as both ostinato bass and melody, and is subject to almost instant inversion. The second is a more undulating figure [1:16]. This second idea undergoes a very lovely transformation in the middle of the sonata." The section from around [7:06] to [7:35] differs significantly from the first edition. It is likely that Neeman is playing a revised version by Agnew, which I believe Larry Sitsky helped publish in 1997. I don't have access to that score, but I attempted to transcribe it so that what's on the screen resembles what's being played. As a result, be aware that all time signatures, chord spellings, etc. in that section are completely guesswork and are likely incorrect. If anyone has a copy of the revised score that they could send to me, please let me know because I could remake the video with it.*
Recorded December 2017 Flute: Jess Hall This was part of my 2nd year recital at the Queensland Conservatorium Griffith University. Two Pastorales for flute was written for flautist Vernon Hill and feature two contrasting movements, both with a sense of improvisation.
