Arthur Farwell Humperdinck Roy Harris Dorothy Delay Bach Mendelssohn Wieniawski Rachmaninoff Hochberg Hollywood Bowl 1872 1927 1934 1952 1996
Three movements of four. Opus 96, 1934. I. AF: "With energy and motion" duration 3' (RE: Allegro, mm = 104. dur. 4') III. AF: "Conveniently fast" duration 3.5' (RE: Fandango, mm = 140. dur. 3.5') IV. AF: "Slowly/Very fast" duration 3' (RE: Rondo brilliante. dur. 3.2') Born in St. Paul, MN, Arthur Farwell +••.••(...)) was trained in Boston and by Humperdinck in Germany. Commonly regarded as a pioneer in the cause of new American music, he was fundamental to the "Indianists" among American composers, with his publications of The Wa-Wan Press in the first years of the 20th century, and for his organization of community music enterprises in California. He helped establish the Hollywood Bowl concerts. Perhaps his most significant place in American music is his mentorship of Roy Harris, beginning in the mid-1920s. In 1927 he joined the music faculty of Michigan State College (future violin pedagogue Dorothy Delay was enrolled). His most enduring compositions are from that time, when he had turned from his mission in Native American and American folk music to more centered classical writing. The entire Sonata seems inspired in genre by the Bach Violin Solos. Though Farwell was more a pianist than a violinist, the score is replete with fingerings and bowings, characteristic of this fastidious composer, if indeed they are his. The movements here reveal the influences, respectively, of Bach/Ysaye, Mendelssohn, and Wieniawski. The 2nd movement ((http•••) suggests Rachmaninoff and Franck. Written for Michael Press at Michigan State College, the Sonata was first performed by Morris Hochberg, his student there, to fulfill doctoral study requirements, as I learned from my meeting with Dr. Hochberg in his last years with the Detroit SO in 1996, ten years after I had recorded the Sonata from the microfilm collection of Farwell's manuscripts at the Eastman School. Two years later I created my edition for publication by Erickson Editions. The published score is available at $50 from Ron Erickson, •••@•••.
