The name derives from "pas menu", which in French means "small step", given that the dance was precisely characterized by minute steps. History Originating in France from a folk dance from the Poitou region, it became a court dance during the Baroque period. It was introduced to the court of Louis XIV by Jean-Baptiste Lully and in a short time it was welcomed in the most varied musical genres, from ballet, to opera, to suite and during the seventeenth century it also became society dance and theatrical dance. The first theatrical minuets appeared in the ballets Le Mariage forcé and Les Amours déguisés of 1664 and therefore the name of this dance was mentioned for the first time by Guillaume Dumanoir in his work Le mariage de la musique avec la danse (The marriage of music with the dance) of the same year. Later Lully, André Campra and Pierre Rameau will insert minuets in a large number of their compositions. In the classical period the minuet was also included in the great musical forms, the symphony, the sonata and the quartet, of which usually constituted the third movement, although sometimes it could also occur as a second movement (for example in Haydn and Mozart), preceding so the slow movement. The fortune of the minuet culminated with the affirmation of the gallant style and ended with the advent of romanticism, although this dance experienced a certain rebirth as a ballroom dance between 1883 and 1890. Musical form The minuet (or menuetto) is a dance, in the classical period to be considered in moderate time and in multi-purpose ternary movement. The musical form is tripartite (ABA) and four-thematic, with the main section A containing two themes and the central section B called trio (so called because originally entrusted to three solo instruments) which contains the other two. In addition, each of the three sections (minuet-trio-minuet) provides for repetition (refrain) even if in a non-functional context for dance the last exposure of A often does not return. This tripartite and repeated form has been fully maintained in the joke, heir to the minuet within the great musical forms.
