Opera Australia Geoffrey Chard John Pringle Pringle Jeffrey Black Angus Wood 1996
One of the highlights in the 40th Anniversary Gala of Opera Australia in 1996 was a cute assembly of six of the most popular Papageno's in the company's history. Geoffrey Chard (who was the first with the National Company), Ronald Maconaghie, John Pringle, Jeffrey Black and Angus Wood (in his baritone days) performed various verses from Papageno's music to the delight of the audience.

'Voss' was adapted for opera from the Patrick White novel by composer Richard Meale and librettist David Malouf. It was a major endeavour to evoke Australian history and an Australian idiom within the operatic tradition, dramatising the interior landscape in conflict with the European compulsion to explore and conquer. 'Voss' used neo-Romantic textures, staging that dissolved the distance between city and desert, and extensive quotations from colonial-era music like the Australian Quadrilles of William Ellard. It was also seen as a culmination of decades of attempts to produce White's novel as the "great Australian film". Opera Australia's premiere cast recording won the 1988 ARIA Award for Best Classical Album, and features the Sydney Symphony Orchestra conducted by Stuart Challender, the Australian Opera Chorus directed by Gordon Kember, and Geoffrey Chard and Marilyn Richardson in the roles of Johann Ulrich Voss and Laura Trevelyan. In 2011, the National Film and Sound Archive inducted it into the 'Sounds of Australia' list of heritage recordings. This video features costume design drawings by Luciana Arrighi, and photographs of the 1986 and 1990 productions taken in part by Don McMurdo, Chrissie Koltai, and William Yang. But being very much a man of today, he is not content merely to present his finds in the scholarly manner of a musical archaeologist, but rather aims for an inspired communication to take place during the act of performance, involving performer, composer and hearers alike. Rooley's Consort of Musicke, which he founded in 1969, has won the respect and love of audiences around the world, as has his duo combination with Emma Kirkby (sometimes extended to a trio with bass David Thomas or soprano Evelyn Tubb). And as a sculptor, he continues his exploration into the meaning of performance by experimenting with the unexpected in wood, iron and stone.
