Cristiano Rizzotto Vidal Pessôa is a student from UFRJ (Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro) and ECU (East Carolina University). Jean Langlais was born in La Fontenelle (Îlle-et-Vilaine, Brittany), a small village near Mont St Michel, France. Langlais became blind due to glaucoma when he was only two years old, and was sent to study at the Institut National des Jeunes Aveugles in Paris, where he began to study the organ. From there, he progressed to the Paris Conservatoire, obtaining prizes in organ, which he studied with Marcel Dupré, composition, which he studied with Paul Dukas, and improvisation, which he studied with André Marchal, to whom he dedicated his Suite Médiévale. After graduating, he returned to the National Institute for the Young Blind to teach, and also taught at the Schola Cantorum from 1961 to 1976. However, it was as an organist that he made his name, following in the steps of César Franck and Charles Tournemire as Organist Titulaire at the Basilica of St. Clotilde, Paris in 1945, a post in which he remained until 1987. He was much in demand as a concert organist, and toured widely across Europe and the United States. Outside music, Langlais was a colorful and charismatic character, for many years living with both his first wife and his mistress (later to become his second wife), and fathering a child at the age of 73. Langlais died in Paris aged 84, and was survived by his second wife Marie-Louise Jaquet-Langlais.

Adam Wilson performs Jean Langlais' Hymns d'Actions de grâces, 'Te Deum' pour Orgue (from Trois Paraphrases Grégoriennes) on the 1879 'Father' Willis/Harrison & Harrison organ of St Mary's Episcopal Cathedral, Edinburgh. (http•••) Jean Langlais +••.••(...)) was born in La Fontenelle to a modest Breton family - his mother was a dressmaker and his father a stonemason. Having lost his sight at the age of two, he studied at the National Institution for Blind Children in Paris where Louis Braille, also an organist, had invented the tactile writing system for blind people. He later entered the Conservatoire de Paris, where he studied improvisation with Charles Tournemire and composition with Marçel Dupré and Paul Dukas (being classmates with Olivier Messiaen in the latter's class). The Hymne d'Actions de Grâces (Hymn of Thanksgiving) is in three sections. The first presents short statements of the 4th-century hymn, 'Te Deum Laudamus' (we praise Thee, O God), with short but dramatic interjections from the full organ; this is similar to the antiphonal style often used in Parisian churches, where a cantor and organist each present the text 'in alternatim'. These distant statements of the melody gradually become more focussed, reminiscent of a grand procession. In the section that follows, the theme undergoes metamorphosis through the undercurrent movement in the left hand which acts as a driving force, as if the Holy Spirit is moving alongside the procession through the Nave of the Gothic Basilique Ste-Clotilde, where Langlais was organist. Increasingly emphatic statements of the theme in the pedals are overcome by the cascading scales, this time in both hands. This heralds the return of the opening material, now displaying the theme in its full majesty.
