Pequeña muestra de un arte importantísimo en la zarzuela, el que más la distinguía de los demás tipos de teatro lírico (sobre este aspecto hay que hablar en pasado, pues desde que la zarzuela se redujo a vestigio de tiempos pretéritos se aplica en general a los papeles destinados a actores o bien el canto operístico o bien un estilo neutro en el que el actor arriesga poco a la hora de adaptar la voz al personaje). La presente selección (dedicada a los actores, pues las actrices merecen otro trabajo específico que publicaré próximamente) es una sucesión de destellos que nos acercan al ambiente del género chico a través de las voces de Gonzalito, Vicente Carrión o Casimiro Ortas; al renacer de la zarzuela grande con Antonio Palacios, Manuel Hernández, Eladio Cuevas...; al arte de quienes fueron, además de grandes actores, destacadísimos directores de escena: Valeriano Ruiz Paris, Ángel de León, Pepe Viñas...; a profesionales que desarrollaban en la zarzuela carreras larguísimas, como Anselmo Fernández, el primer Julián de "La verbena de la Paloma" en Barcelona en 1894 y que cincuenta años después ofrecía un Don Hilarión magistral a la vez que seguía estrenando obras. La capacidad de transformarse en un personaje modificando hasta la voz fue un patrimonio inmaterial transmitido de generación en generación entre los mejores artistas. Afortunadamente conservamos algunos registros que nos acercan a cómo se interpretaba aquella zarzuela que llenaba teatros a diario; Pepe Alba, actor de prestigio tanto en el teatro dramático como en el lírico era un buen tenor cuando abordaba repertorio como la opereta: ¡atención a la voz que muestra interviniendo como actor cómico en la grabación incluida! Lamentablemente, los grandes actores serán los primeros artistas que se vean obligados a emigrar del teatro lírico español a medida que, tras la Guerra Civil, descienda tanto el número de compañías como de estrenos que ofrezcan personajes con enjundia. Los actores especializados en zarzuela (primeros actores, tenores cómicos y tiples cómicas) fueron considerados artistas líricos hasta aproximadamente los años sesenta del siglo pasado. As the principal mezzo-soprano of the Belgrade Opera for a number of years, Ms. Zubovic frequently performed the roles of Adalgisa, Charlotte, Carmen, Rosina, Amneris, and Azucena, among others. Born in Zagreb, Croatia, she received her BA and MA degrees from the Zagreb and Belgrade Music Academies, respectively. Upon the suggestion of Zinka Kunc-Milanov, her long time adviser, she continued her advanced training at La Scala, Milan. A prizewinner of a number of competitions in Geneva, Ostende, Vienna, and Rio de Janeiro, she also received the prestigious "Il Barbiere di Siviglia" award in 1985 at the "F. Vinas" competition in Barcelona. Ms. Zubovic made her Carnegie Hall debut in the 1987 Wagner Gala and subsequently in a production of Andrea Chenier. Thereafter, she appeared as Amneris in Opera Pacific's 1988 production of Aida. Since 1990, she appeared as Dalila and Carmen in numerous performances in Melbourne and Adelaide, Australia. She has frequently appeared in all of Yugoslavia's opera houses and major symphony orchestras as well as many Yugoslavian music festivals and television programs. A versatile artist, she has also performed oratorios, lieds, and folk songs. Ms. Zubovic has recorded three albums featuring Spanish selections by Granados, de Falla, and Lorca, works by Handel, Purcell, Gluck, and Scarlatti, as well as selections by Yugoslavian composers. Since 1991 she has been living in Orange County, California. In January of 2010 she joined the Saddleback College Music Department as an adjunct Professor of Applied Voice and language coach. D. Zubovic owns her private voice studio in Laguna Hills.
