Toccata 0:00 Fuga 2:47 JOHANN SEBASTIAN BACH +••.••(...)) [attributed] - Toccata con Fuga (18 c.) Since its many appearances in media beginning in the early 20th century, the Toccata and Fugue in D Minor has forever cemented itself as arguably the most iconic and recognizable piece in the entirety of organ repertoire. By extension, it is also arguably the most famous work attributed to Bach, and many who become introduced to his music often find themselves starting off with this piece. Like most of Bach’s organ works, most scholars place this work towards the beginning of his career, possibly as a young man in Arnstadt, with some even suggesting Weimar. Noted Bach scholar Christoph Wolff believes it was written in Bach’s adolescence during a period of undisciplined and wild experimentation inspired by the “Stylus phantasticus” genre performed by other North German composers. In the latter half of the 20th century, however, scholarly opinion began to change as many examined the unusual characteristics of BWV 565 in comparison to Bach’s other organ works. Peter Williams has suggested that the version for organ we know today is a transcription by an anonymous composer of a now-lost work for solo violin by Bach. Several candidates for a composer have been proposed, including members of Bach’s circle. Names like Johann Peter Kellner and Johann Ludwig Krebs have appeared, but with little evidence in their favor. One musicologist and organist, Jonthan B. Hall, has named Cornelius Heinrich Dretzel, a former student of Bach from Nuremberg, as the true composer. One of his arguments stems from the fact that a prelude in A minor (BWV 897), which features a passage similar to another in BWV 565, was re-attributed to Dretzel. His theory however, while interesting, has not been widely accepted. Regardless of this work’s true authorship, it will likely remain in our cultural consciousness for many years to come.
