Metropolitan Opera Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra Carlos Enrique Santelli Ortiz
Marie is the daughter of the regiment. Orphaned as an infant, she was adopted and raised by a French army regiment not knowing about her noble past. The military life suits her until she falls for the handsome peasant Tonio. Love-struck for Marie he must join the regiment to be near her, and gain approval from her army of “fathers”. To further complicate matters Marie is whisked away from the regiment by the Marquise of Birkenfeld who knows of her aristocratic lineage and wants to introduce her properly to society. This, of course, upends the regimental order of things, and Marie must then choose between marrying for love or for social status. It’s a show of equal parts comedy, romance, and vocal fireworks. Orlando native and Metropolitan Opera National Competition winner Carlos Enrique Santelli takes on the role of Tonio and the famous aria “Ah Mes Amis” with no less than nine high C’s, Soprano Camille Ortiz takes on the title role of Marie, the beloved daughter of the regiment, and bass-baritone Peter Strummer returns to Orlando in the buffo role of Sergeant Sulpice. The production features musicians from the Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra and members of the Opera Orlando Chorus. Sung in French with English dialogue and supertitles. A pre-show lecture is offered free for all ticket holders 45 minutes prior to each performance featuring the conductor and stage director. Visit us at (http•••)

Puccini Ruggero Leoncavallo Bury Enrico Caruso Arturo Toscanini Helm Carlos Enrique Santelli Nbc Symphony Orchestra 1896 1906
The idea of writing an opera based on 19th century Parisian Bohemians living in the Latin Quarter was a tough sell for Puccini, who was coaxed into the project only after hearing a rumor that his rival, Ruggero Leoncavallo, was working on an opera with a similar story! Determined to bury his competitor, Puccini forged ahead furiously, premiering his version over a year before that of his adversary. His La Bohème has survived the test of time and we are the richer for it! Indeed, Bohème is one of the world’s most beloved operas. Puccini’s ability to express emotion through sound, is a resounding reason for its popularity. In fact, his composition resonated so fully with the public that recordings of the individual arias were some of the first commercially recorded music in history - including “Che gelida manina”, first recorded in 1906 by Italian tenor Enrico Caruso. Arturo Toscanini, one of the most revered conductors of all time, was at the helm of the world premier of La Bohème in 1896. In fact, the composer and conductor shared a strong friendship over many years and it was Toscanini who spearheaded the completion of Puccini’s final opera Turandot, after the composer’s untimely death. 50 years after the very first production of Bohème, Toscanini recorded his old friend’s opera in full with his NBC Symphony Orchestra. This is the only recording of a Puccini opera with the piece’s original conductor! Our tenor Carlos Enrique Santelli brings Rodolfo’s aria “Che gelida manina” into the 21st century with pianist Christopher James Ray.
