Whose soul was mournful, sad, and lamenting, when was pierced by a sword. 3. Oh how sad, how afflicted was that blessed mother of her only son. 4. How did she mourn and grieved, loving mother, while seeing the suffering of her beautiful son. 5. For the sins of his people, she sees Jesus in torments and subjected to scourges. 6. Vidit suum dulcem natum moriéndo desolátum, dum emísit spíritum. She sees her sweet son dying in anguish, as he gives up his spirit. 7. Eia, Mater, fons amóris, me sentíre vim dolóris fac, ut tecum lúgeam. O mother, fountain of love, make me feel the power of your sorrow, that I may mourn with thee. 8. Fac, ut árdeat cor meum in amándo Christum Deum, ut sibi compláceam. Make my heart burn in the love of Christ my God, that I may please him. 9. Sancta Mater, istud agas, crucifíxi fige plagas cordi meo válide. Holy Mother, place the wounds of the crucified firmly in my heart. Tui Nati vulneráti, tam dignáti pro me pati, pœnas mecum dívide. Let me share the pain of him, who accepted to painfully die for my sins, Fac me vere tecum flere, crucifíxo condolére, donec ego víxero. For the rest of my life, make me mourn with you and share the pain of the crucified. Juxta Crucem tecum stare, te libenter sociáre in planctu desídero. I desire to stand beside the cross, and to join with thee in lamentation. Virgo vírginum præclára, mihi iam non sis amára, fac me tecum plángere. Virgin of virgins, be not bitter me, let me share your grief. 10. Fac me plagis vulnerári, Cruce hac inebriári, ob amorem filii. Make me keeper of Christ’s death, make me share his Passion and to ponder his wounds, for the love of your son. 11. That I be not set on fire but through you, Virgin, may I be defended, in the day of judgment. Fac me cruce custodiri morte Christi prœmuniri confoveri gratia. Make me a witness of the cross, strengthen by Christ’s death, and cherished in grace. 12. Quando corpus moriétur, fac, ut ánimæ donétur paradísi glória. When my body will die, grant that my soul be given the glory of Paradise. 13. Amen!
