This is a collection of early brass works from the 16th and 17th centuries. The Brass Ensemble was a group of horn players all members of the Boston Symphony Orchestra. The recording, on Unicorn Records, is from 1954. Unicorn made some interesting recordings, many at M.I.T. One of their engineers was the son of Bela Bartok. They also were the label that first recorded the idiosyncratic pianist Ernst Levy. The album notes specify that the Brass Ensemble adapted the key, tone, and phrasing to make the pieces more authentic to the era in which they would have been played. Thus the sound is to my ears, a bit spare. Most of them (to me) are not well known. You may notice some difference in acoustics as the first first 3 pieces were recorded in Boston Symphony Hall so there is a bit more air and depth in the recordings. The members of the Brass Ensemble were: Roger Voison, Armando Ghitalla (trumpets) Harold Meek, Paul Keaney (horns) William Moyer Kauko Kahila (trombones) Josef Orosz, (baritone) Kilton Vinal Smith (tuba) Pieces on here are by Giovanni Gabrielli, Aurelio Bonelli, Giovanni Battista Buonamente, John Adson, Mathew Locke, Henry Purcell, Johann Pezel, Gottfried Reiche and J.S. Bach. Other Details: Unicorn Records - UN 1003 Date of Issue 1954 Tracks/Pieces - 12 Mono recording
