Concertino for Marimba (1940) by Paul Creston +••.••(...)) Performed by Lindsey Hartfelder - April 28rd, 2019 Piano Accompanist - Oksana Glouchko Graduate Recital at University of Delaware Gore Recital Hall I. Vigorous - 0:00 II. Calm - 4:40 III. Lively - 9:30 Video and audio by John Palmer Concertino for Marimba was the first concerto written for the marimba, and thus Paul Creston composed it with the intention of demonstrating the full soloistic capabilities of the instrument with orchestral accompaniment. It was commissioned by Frederique Petrides, conductor of the all-female orchestra Orchestrette Classique, based in New York City. It was completed in March 1940 and premiered on April 29, 1940 by Ruth Stuber. She once stated in an interview, “No one really knew what a marimba was. It was 1940, and the marimba was not that popular.” The first movement is structured on two main themes, one powerfully rhythmic and one lyric. These themes develop in the solo through a variety of rhythmic patterns, use of hemiolas, and syncopation. The second movement begins with an introductory theme by solo flute, which is followed by the soloist with the main theme in a chorale texture. The movement’s mood exudes tranquility, except for a cadenza-like climax in the middle of the movement. The last movement is a bright, exciting scherzo that leads to the finale in 6/8 time. Like the first movement, main themes go through many rhythmic variations, with a smattering of both lyric and dramatic elements.
