John Scott Fuchs Munich Symphony Orchestra 1436 1980 1999
ABOUT THE SCORE: No stranger to either pastoral English-sounding music (“Mill on the Floss”, “The Shooting Party”) nor adventurous horse racing theatrics (“King of the Wind”), composer John Scott combined both sounds (alongside tense thriller and action material) for 1999’s “Shergar”, a film based on the true story of the titular racehorse that disappeared under mysterious circumstances in Ireland in the early 1980’s at the behest of ransom-seeking members of the IRA. While the story of the horse’s life invariably ended in tragedy, that didn’t stop Scott from penning a wonderfully valorous title theme for the animal, heard often throughout the score. While its heroically extroverted nature makes it immediately winsome and memorable, it is more so the long-lined, string and woodwind-carried secondary phrase that imbues the melody with the requisite heart and soulful perseverance only this composer can provide. Intentionally or not, Scott crafted a valorous theme that could have been just as well-applied to a more humanistic tale of sportsmanship as it is to the saga of a noble stallion. While the overriding “Shergar” theme dominates the score, there are secondary ideas in the forms of an adrenal chase motif (see 11:43 and 14:36) and dark, robust suspense music associated with the IRA’s dastardly doings (not highlighted in this condensed suite). Regardless of the tumult in the story’s proceedings, a bold statement of the handsome title theme is never far away from its next iteration. Recorded by engineer Peter Fuchs in 1999 with the Munich Symphony, the score had to be recorded in what was essentially a glass-walled greenhouse and mixed live, a one-two punch that resulted in a somewhat dull recording compared to the oft-excellent acoustics Scott was accustomed to when recording in Munich. The music shines nonetheless, and the composers’ orchestration is, as always, creative and distinctive. Another wining effort in a massive pantheon of wonderful music from this gifted man!
