Ludwig van Beethoven - Kanon WoO 35 - August 3, 1825 This little canon first printed posthumously in 1867 has eight bars – 20 notes – to be repeated. It is dedicated to Monsieur S. M. Boyer. And who was he? Different musicologists in different times offer different answers. The Beethoven Gesamtausgabe from the 1950s as well as the German music encyclopedia MGG from 1999, state that he was the famous Dutch romantic painter, Otto de Boer. There is no explanation given for the initials M.S. The modern web page unheardbeethoven.org says it was the famous French surgeon Alexis Boyer, whom Beethoven recently may have consulted in Vienna because of his ear issues. The dedication was written in French and this person actually spelled his last name Boyer and not Boer. This suggestion probably comes from the scholar Ludwig Nohl 1831–85. But what about the initials? Emerich Kastner wrote the book, Ludwig van Beethovens sämtliche Briefe, published in 1975, with Beethoven's entire correspondence. He believes it was the Dutch amateur cellist, Samson de Boer, who had just visited Beethoven. Judging by the conversation note book used due to Beethoven's deafness, they apparently hit it off well. One of our times' greatest Beethoven experts, Jos van der Zanden, also believes this is the right answer. Samson Moses Boer was the amateur cellist's full name. But why does Beethoven write Boyer? Did they perhaps speak French with one another or was it extra honorable to write someone's name in French? He also signed his own name, Louis van Beethoven. If this last story is correct, the canon was probably intended for two celli performing the score one octave lower than written, which was the typical way of writing cello parts back then, writes Emerich Kastner. So who do you think M.S.Boyer was?
