Chorus Angelicus Severe Staple
The choristers, music educators, staff, and board members at Chorus Angelicus would like to extend a token of love and support to everyone during these hard times of quarantine and uncertainty. Pretty much like everyone else, we have suddenly found our lives upended and curtailed by the pandemic, and had to find creative solutions to keep our music ringing in our audience’s “ear.” Our teachers are using technology to connect with the young singers: vibrant Zoom video conference rehearsals and busy whiteboards on Google Classroom ensure that our students are still singing and keeping the music alive! Our Junior Choir Director, Andrew Skinner, created a stunning Virtual Choir: this technology allows the voices of each one of our choristers to fly into the world with its own wings and meet the rest of the choir in the Internet ether! And now we can offer you this rendition of the celebrated English Renaissance canon “Non Nobis, Domine” as a Virtual Choir. If you are close to Chorus Angelicus, you know that this wonderful miniature masterpiece, “Non Nobis, Domine” is a universal prayer of altruism, thanksgiving, and devotion to our neighbors and fellow citizens. Nothing could be more relevant right now, in a time when we are being asked to sacrifice our individualities so people affected with severe cases of the Coronavirus can actually live. So, more than ever, this song, whose words talk about selflessness, about the world not being so much about us but about unity, seems to be the perfect choice. “Non Nobis, Domine” has been a staple for Chorus Angelicus since its inception, some 30 years ago. We sing it everywhere: when we want to say grace before a delicious meal, to thank a generous donor that has made a beautiful project possible, when we are on tour, to try out the acoustics of stunning churches and cathedrals around the world, when we are bored at airports or train stations… “Non Nobis, Domine” has traveled with us everywhere, and now it has become a Virtual Choir project, one that we offer in solidarity with all other music educators out there, having to, overnight, reinvent the ways of teaching, with essential workers, with all healthcare personnel risking their lives to save ours, and with everyone who needs a little TLC during this hardship. To all of you, with appreciation, from Chorus Angelicus!
