Huw Watkins Aronowitz Ensemble
Tom and I feel unbelievably lucky that some of our most delightful friends — with whom we’ve shared the stage, plenty of laughs, and far too much wine — also happen to be among our favorite composers! Huw Watkins is one of Britain’s best-loved musicians, not only a profound composer but also a ludicrously brilliant pianist. For today’s #UriPosteJukeBox, here is Huw with his composer hat on, introducing the beautiful ‘Arietta’ he has written for us, the fourth of our #UriPostePremieres: “I’m lucky enough to have had my music played by both Tom and Elena; I wrote a septet, Sad Steps, for the Aronowitz Ensemble, which Tom premiered and recorded, and I played my piano quintet with Elena in Prussia Cove (where Tom sat in the audience making me nervous). So when they asked earlier this month if I would write them something, I knew I would be treated to a very classy performance, and said yes immediately. It’s an arietta, a quiet moment of introspection, where the violin’s melody unfolds slowly, suspended above the piano’s gentle harmonic web. I am hugely grateful to Victoria Robey for her generous support commissioning this piece, and to Elena and Tom for thinking of me, and for playing it.”
