As chilling and emotional as ever: Kate Lindsey returns as Offred in ENO's strong revival of Poul Ruders' The Handmaid's Tale
[…] them' roles, important in the ensemble but without much time in the spotlight, were Annabella-Vesela Ellis as New Offglen, Alan Oke as the Doctor, Helen Johnson as Moira's aunt, Lydia Marchione as Warren's wife, plus Adam Sullivan, Ronald Naire, Robert Winslade Anderson, Lixin Liu, Amy Kerenza Sedgwick and Sophie Goldrick.Juliet Stevenson was poised and rather moving as Professor Pieixoto, her poignant final envoi to Offred (whose fate remained unknown) emphasising the problem with transporting Margaret Attwood's novel to other genres (opera, television series); Attwood's prose is so wonderful and so luminous, it hardly need amplification in another medium. However Poul Ruders and librettist Paul Bentley make and admirable job of it and by the end of the opera we were indeed transported.Poul Ruders: The Handmaid's Tale - Rachel Nicholls, Rhian Lois - English National Opera 2024 (Photo: Zoe Martin)In the pit, Joana Carneiro drew a terrific performance from the ENO […]

Four new productions, three revivals and some interesting debuts: English National Opera's brave new 2021/22 season
[…] Williams (making her role debut), Hanna Hipp [who sang Cherubino in last year's new production of Le nozze di Figaro, see my review], Amitai Pati, and Benson Wilson with Soraya Mafi as Despina and Neal Davies as Don Alfonso. The final main-stage production of the season is a return of Poul Ruders' The Handmaid's Tale (April 2022) in a new production by Annilese Miskimmon, conducted by Joana Carneirio. This is a canny move as Margaret Attwood's novel now has far greater prominence, thanks to its television adaptation, than it did back in 2003 when ENO gave the premiere of the English version of the opera. But it also addresses the issue that many singers are reluctant to re-learn roles in English, so an English-language modern classic like Ruders' opera is a way of attracting distinguished visitors. This new production will be using a new orchestration. Kate Lindsay makes her […]

A Life on Line - Being Black in America, A Voice of One's Own from Positive Note and Telling Tales at the Wigmore Hall
[…] Whately and Madelaine Newton, whilst Simon Lepper's page turner was his husband. The programme was an interlinking sequence of stories, delightful and disturbing, in words and music. Beginning with Jonathan Dove, ending with Stephen Sondheim and taking in Rebecca Clarke (again!), Judith Weir, Stanford, Samuel Barber (two of the Hermit Songs), and Juliana Hall's monodrama Godiva which was written for Kitty Whately. Music and word interlinked beautifully, Dove's The Siren was followed by Margaret Attwood's Siren Song, Rebecca Clarke's stunning The Seal Man, setting John Masefield was followed by Masefield's poem Sea Fever. Samuel Barber's Hermit Songs were counterpointed with Colm Toibin's The Testament of Mary. The stunning new monodrama from Juliana Hall was followed by an American composer of a different cast with a sequence of songs from Into the Woods. Throughout Kitty Whately's attention to text and story-telling, alongside strong musical values meant that the whole evening […]
