Anglais - Nothing to Frighten the Horses in My Fair Lady at the London Coliseum
[…] Marc Brenner The standout performance comes from Amara Okereke who as Eliza Doolittle undergoes the large transformation required of her character extremely convincingly, and shows how Eliza has a strong heart as well as a good brain. Her voice is also extremely fine, and if it feels just a little too thick to make the top lines of ‘I could have danced all night’ really bloom, it is never less than compelling. Harry Hadden-Paton is an interesting Henry Higgins because he initially seems particularly cruel for the reason that he makes it difficult for us to see the flaws in his own character that would generate just a little sympathy for him. However, as the evening wears on he does reveal all of the facets to his personality, so that he becomes quite a fascinating figure. Malcolm Sinclair is a suitably noble and gentle Colonel Pickering and […]

From jazz and groove to classical: I chat to composer and improvising trombonist Alex Paxton about his three recent works nominated for this years Ivors Composer Awards
[…] for the piece and wrote over the top of it. He used the synth that featured on his disc Music for Bosch People [on Birmingham Record Company, see my review], but added other high treble sounds. And he has a small tenor trombone from the 1900s, essentially a sackbut, and he loves this. It makes a really metallic, gristly sound and the trombone part in Corncrack Dreams was very much exploring that. Alex Paton's image create to accompany Sometimes Voices Sometimes Voices was a commission from Hyper Duo, which is a contemporary classical drum and keyboard duo. He regards the duo as amazing musicians, and whilst everything is notated, it is a piece of groove music (to date, Alex's only piece of groove music that is fully notated). The work uses two keyboards, one a synth and the other playing samples but the performers also play […]

K: Brazilian conductor Simone Menezes and her new ensemble in Borodin, Debussy, Copland, Villa-Lobos and Lacaze
[…] rhythms. Frankly, I wanted more of this, and do hope that the ensemble explores Villa-Lobos' copious output much further. The final work on the disc is contemporary French but takes the indigenous Australian peoples as its inspiration. Written for piano trio, it is full of vividly imagined textures for this tricky combination and some fascinating and evocative writing. Definitely a work to explore. Simone Menezes and Ensemble K recording session (Photo Marc Paton) I enjoyed this disc immensely, Simone Menezes and the players of Ensemble K present their varied selection of music with a vividness and a sense of sheer engagement which makes the disc delightful listening. The ensemble brings a very distinctive quality to each of the pieces which, combined with fine musicianship, makes for a lovely disc. I look forward to seeing what they do next, and hope they might think about exploring some […]

Co-founder Jonathan Darbourne introduces The Vache Baroque Festival's debut staging of Purcell's Dido and Aeneas with Katie Bray as Dido
[…] team. Jonathan feels lucky that such people were available, and he is excited by the plans. Jolyon Loy The opera will be fully staged by Thomas Guthrie, who has staged Dido and Aeneas more than once including doing it at the Barbican with puppets! [see the review on the Arts Desk]. Jonathan sings with Thomas, and they have a good working relationship, whilst sets and costumes will be designed by Ruth Paton who has worked with Thomas before. With such a short lead time, Jonathan sees it as important that the team involves people who know each other and have an affinity with each other. The opera will also be fully danced, and the production's choreographer Ukweli Roach is someone with whom Jonathan went to school! Jonathan was blown away by the way he moved, and they have kept in touch. Ukweli has both worked as […]
