From Harald en Italie to Le prophète in New York: 2024 Bard Summerscape focuses on Berlioz and his world
[…] I am not sure whether the opera has had a performance in the USA.In concert there is a chance to hear not only Berlioz' Symphonie Fantastique but the far rarer Lélio, ou Le retour à la vie: monodrame lyrique, plus songs, the Te Deum, selections from Les Troyens, Le mort d’Ophélie, Harold en Italie and La damnation de Faust, alongside music by Reicha, Weber, Le Sueur, Spontini, Thomas, Gluck, Auber, Meyerbeer, Rossini, Liszt, Wagner, Saint-Saens, Bizet, Faure, Viardot, Farrenc, Bertin, Grandval, Cherubini, Paganini, Halevy, Adam, Strauss, Ernst, Mendelssohn, Schumann, Hiller, Gottschalk, Raff, Rimsky-Korsakov, Debussy, Varese and Messiaen.Full details from the Fisher Center website.

[…] adventures in classical antiquity. Les Arts Florissantes combine the well-known "Quel doux concerts" from Rameau's Hippolyte et Aricie (1733) (which Christie conducted at Glyndebourne), with "Quelle voix suspend mes alarmes" from Hercules mourant (1761) by Antoine Dauvergne. This latter is lyrical yet elegaic, the strings in the orchestra sweeping gracefully decorated by woodwinds. Religion allegory and comedy ! The miniature Cantate rein de tout (the Cantata of Nothing at all" by Nicholas Racot de Grandval pits mock elegance with wit. The singer duets with flutes "Quoi!" she shouts then bursts into laughter and changes her tune (literally) into dance accompanied by bells like the bells on the shoes of a folk dancer. The strings attempt to restore decorum but to no avail. "Aimiez-vous!" the singer cries and the orchestra wells up forceful chords. Frilly ntrills and a short sharp ending "Rien de tout!" More high spirits with three […]

Next to Beethoven, Louise Farrenc
[…] composers of the past than there has been previously, and when is a greater opportunity to celebrate this than on International Women’s Day! However International Women’s Day is not the only day that Insula orchestra will be celebrating female composers. In upcoming programmes we will be performing Fanny Mendelssohn’s Hero et Leander, and Clara Schumann’s Piano Concerto, and I would love to tackle the work of even more rarely performed female composers, like Clemence de Grandval. For those who haven’t yet heard of Louise Farrenc, please tell us a bit more about her. What appeals to you in her music? Why should we all come along and discover her? I love to always keep an ear out for rare and undervalued works. I discovered the work of Louise Farrenc a few years ago, but I wanted to wait for the perfect moment to perform her […]

The boy friend
[…] many others. Sonya Yoncheva, who went on to win first prize in 2010’s Operalia, participated in the 2007 edition which was the subject of a fascinating in-depth documentary about the academy. New Yorkers will get a chance to judge Yoncheva’s star quality (and baroque cred) when she appears in Handel’s Aci, Galatea e Polifemo at Lincoln Center in October. The Jardin concert at BAM on April 19 features music by Dauvergne, Grandval, Montéclair, Campra and Gluck (selections from L’ivrogne corrigé, which was recently staged in New York), as well as Rameau. The widely varied program looks fascinating and any opportunity all to hear performed live Rameau’s supremely beautiful quartet “Tendre amour” should be embraced. This year’s laureates include Daniela Skorka (Israel), Emilie Renard (UK), Benedetta Mazzucato (Italy), Victor Sicard (France), Cyril Costanzo (France), and Zachary Wilder (US). A tenor, Wilder is only the […]
