Rarely performed RVW & Gurney plus an Edgar Bainton premiere: this year's English Music Festival
St Mary's Church, Horsham, the location for this year's English Music Festival The 14th English Music Festival will be taking place from 28-31 May 2021 at St Mary’s Church, Horsham, West Sussex, where the festival hosted several concerts last year. This year's festival will feature several rarely performed works including RVW's Violin Concerto, the Concerto Accademico, Ivor Gurney’s song-cycle The Western Playland, which sets words by A. E. Housman, and the world premiere of a piano piece by Edgar Bainton.The Orchestra of the Swan launches the festival with a concert which features the RVW concerto alongside music by Peter Warlock, Walter Leigh, Gustav Holst, and John Ireland. Violinist Rupert Marshall-Luck and pianist Duncan Honeybourne will be performing sonatas by Bliss, Howells, Delius and Ireland alongside the Bainton premiere. Contemporary Piano Soundbites
During the lockdown, pianist Duncan Honeybourne commissioned a series of piano miniatures by diverse composers including Graham Fitkin, John McLeod, Sadie Harrison, Francis Pott, Luke Whitlock, David Lancaster, John Casken and pieces by young and emerging composers, and he premiered these in video recitals recorded at home alongside a fundraising project for Help Musicians UK's hardship fund. Now Honeybourne has recorded a selection of the pieces as Contemporary Piano Soundbites for a disc on Prima Facie Records, and profits from the sale of the CD will also go towards the fundraising for Help Musicians UK. Recorded under social distancing conditions in July, Honeybourne's original intention in the pieces was to harness the zeitgeist of the present situation, and create an artistic keepsake of an extraordinary phase of our history. Live in Lockdown: The English Music Festival goes on-line
In common with many other arts events, the 14th English Music Festival (EMF) which was due to take place this month has moved on-line with a weekend of events from Friday 22 May to Monday 25 May 2020. A number of EMF artists have live filmed concerts and talks from their homes, so we will hear baritone Roderick Williams on Vaughan Williams’s Willow Wood, conductor Hilary Davan Wetton on British composers, conductor Joseph Fort looks at the English version of Brahms’s Requiem, plus talks from composer Richard Blackford and violinist Rupert Marshall-Luck. In his film, Paul Guinery also delves into his basement archive and shares with us his beautiful and fascinating scores.
