Large scale, striking & engaging: Mozart's Die Zauberflöte in an historic quarry in Austria
Mozart: Die Zauberflöte - Oper im Steinbruch (Photo Andreas Tischler) Mozart Die Zauberflöte; Kateryna Kasper, Michael Porter, Luke Stoker, Danae Kontora, Uwe Schenke Primus, dir: Carolin Pienkos & Cornelius Obonya, cond: Karsten Januschke; Oper im Steinbruch, Austria Reviewed by Robert Hugill on 15 August 2019 Star rating: 4.0 (★★★★) Impressive both in scale and artistic quality, Mozart's opera performed in an historic quarry in AustriaOper im Steinbruch (Opera in the Quarry) presents opera in the 2000 quarry at St Margarethen near Eisenstadt in Austria. Opera has been performed there since the late 1990s, but there was no opera last year and this year is the first under the new artistic director Daniel Serafin, himself a former singer but with a degree in business administration and something of a minor Austrian celebrity as he has been on the country's equivalent of Strictly Come Dancing twice. The quarry is huge, […]

Wagner: Der Ring des Nibelungen at Oper Leipzig
[…] and he soon found his demise at the tip of Siegfried’s sword while poisonous, scheming, cunning old Mime soon got his lot, too. There were no more dancing bears to put the wind up him.But as Fafner lay dying, Siegfried, dithering and confused, looked slightly forlorn over his actions. Max Bruch Die Loreley - non-Wagnerian Wagner ?
Live from Prinzregententheater, Munich, Max Bruch's opera Die Loreley (op 16, 1863) on BR Klassik. The Münchner Rundfunkorchester (conducted by Stefan Blunier) joins with the Prague Philharmonic Choir (the opera was popular once in 19th century Prague). A very good cast: Michaela Kaune, Magdalena Hinterdobler, Danae Kontora,Thomas Mohr, Benedikt Eder, Jan Hendrik Rootering and Sebastian Campione. The performance has been supported with talks, podcasts etc. As to be expected, the opera, with a libretto by Emmanuel Geibel, is in the Romantic style, but is surprisingly un-Wagnerian, harking back perhaps to earlier German music theatre. Certainly the choruses suggest Wagner, but the connections to Weber and Marschner are also valid. Critics at the time used Bruch as a stick with […]
