A Double is an elaboration on the preceding movement, where the melody is quickened— often twice as quickly. The harmonic structure of the Double and its preceding movement is the same, allowing for one to play both movements at the same time with very interesting results. Pieces studied:Sarabande and Double from Sixth English Suite, BWV 811Gigue and Double from the c minor lute suite, BWV 997Partita in b minor for solo violin, BWV 1002People/places mentioned:Burp Castle at 41 East 7th Street in the East Village of Manhattan (between 2nd Ave & Cooper Square).Paul Spring (guitarist)How To Support This Podcast:https://www.paypal.me/wtfbachhttps://venmo.com/wtfbachhttps://cash.app/$wtfbachor become a paid subscriber at wtfbach.substack.com Get full access to WTF Bach at wtfbach.substack.com/subscribe
Tchaikovsky’s ballet The Nutcracker, which has its origins in a novella by E. T. A. Hoffmann, contains some of the best-loved music ever written. But its composer wasn’t very happy with it, perhaps because the plot he was given to work with allowed him to present only a series of dances, losing the moral basis of Hoffman’s surprisingly modern tale, with its messages of inclusivity and what is now called ‘women’s agency’ – here it is the little girl who saves the prince. Hoffmann’s aspirational story continues well after the ballet ends, with the little girl, now grown up, marrying the prince, who is now king. John Mauceri has brought the ballet back to its inspiration, calling on music from elsewhere in Tchaikovsky’s orchestral output to fashion this ‘retelling’, marrying Hoffmann’s text and Tchaikovsky’s music for the first time. On 30 March 2023, Deutsche Grammophon announced the signing of an exclusive agreement with Joe Hisaishi, the revered Japanese composer whose work has become synonymous with the magical Studio Ghibli animations of director Hayao Miyazaki. Spanning the full spectrum of Hisaishi’s work as composer, conductor and pianist, the deal will deliver a richly varied range of audio and audiovisual recordings. For his first DG album, out now, Hisaishi has created an exciting series of symphonic arrangements of his original soundtracks for such Ghibli classics as Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke, and My Neighbor Totoro. Fittingly titled A Symphonic Celebration and made in London with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by the composer, the album presents state-of-the-art recordings of the extraordinary music of this much-loved artistic force in animated movie-making.Track Listing:1 Merry-Go-Round Of Life (from 'Howls Moving Castle')2 One Summer's Day (The Name of Life) (English Version from 'Spirited Away')3 The Legend of the Wind (from 'Nausicaa¨ of the Valley of the Wind')4 Nausicaa¨ Requiem (from 'Nausicaa¨ of the Valley of the Wind')5 The Battle between Mehve and Corvette (from 'Nausicaa¨ of the Valley of the Wind')6 The Distant Days (from 'Nausicaa¨ of the Valley of the Wind')7 The Bird Man (from 'Nausicaa¨ of the Valley of the Wind')8 A Town with an Ocean View (from 'Kiki's Delivery Service')9 Heartbroken Kiki (from 'Kiki's Delivery Service')10 Mother’s Broom (from 'Kiki's Delivery Service')11 The Legend of Ashitaka (from 'Princess Mononoke')12 The Demon God (from 'Princess Mononoke')13 Princess Mononoke (from 'Princess Mononoke')14 A Journey (A Dream of Flight) (from 'The Wind Rises')15 Nahoko (The Encounter) (from 'The Wind Rises')16 A Journey (A Kingdom of Dreams) (from 'The Wind Rises')17 Deep Sea Pastures (from 'Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea')18 Mother Sea (from 'Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea')19 Ponyo's Sisters Lend a Hand - A Song for Mothers and the Sea20 Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea (from 'Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea').21 Doves and the Boy (from 'Castle in the Sky')22 Carrying You (from 'Castle in the Sky')23 Bygone Days (from 'Porco Rosso')24 Symphonic Variation Merry-Go-Round + Cave of Mind25 One Summer's Day (The Name of Life)26 Reprise (from 'Spirited Away')27 The Path of the Wind (from 'My Neighbor Totoro')28 Hey Let's Go (from 'My Neighbor Totoro')29 My Neighbor Totoro (from 'My Neighbor Totoro')This album is broadcasted with the permission of Crossover Media Music Promotion (Zachary Swanson and Amanda Bloom).
Many young musicians dream of making a comfortable living as a solo artist playing recitals, appearing with orchestras, selling CDs. Frederick Moyer has been doing that for 40 years, making a living entirely on performances and record sales. The last teaching job he had was in 1983. What makes Fred particularly interesting to speak to on the subject of solo careers is that you probably have never heard of him! It is one thing to build a career out of a huge splashy success that puts you on the map. Fred has done it without ever having a major New York manager, or a recording on a major label. Since 1994, when he started keeping track, he has played over 7000 concerts. He has sold over 50,000 classical and jazz CDs, has played in 44 countries, and in such far-flung venues as Suntory Hall in Tokyo, Sydney Opera House, Windsor Castle, Carnegie Recital Hall, Tanglewood, and the Kennedy Center, and has appeared as piano soloist with most of the major orchestras of the United States as well as many orchestras of Europe, Asia, South America, Africa and Australia. An avid computer programmer, he often incorporates technology into his concerts and owns patents for music-related inventions including the MoyerCam which allows everyone in the audience to see the pianist's hands during a concert. He performs note-for-note transcriptions of such jazz pianists as Oscar Peterson, Bill Evans and Erroll Garner, bringing this great American music onto classical music stages. In 2009, he and Dr. Paul Green unveiled two unknown piano works by Robert Schumann. Many composers have written for Moyer, including David Ott whose Second Piano Concerto Moyer recorded with the London Symphony. Other composers include Pulitzer Prize winners George Walker and Ned Rorem. Find Frederick at his website, look at his cool CAMERA, check out his recordings.
