Malin Hartelius Margarethe Bence William Christie Vienna State Opera 1768 1966 1989 1991 1992 1997 2006
THE SONGBIRD: Born in 1966 in Malmo, Malin Hartelius studied music in Vienna with soprano Margarethe Bence. In 1989, she became a member of the Vienna State Opera Studio, appearing as Celia (Lucio Silla) and Papagena. in 1991 she became a member of the Zürich Opera and sang Pamina, Adele, Blonde, and Ännchen. Her Salzburg debut in 1992 was Barbarina; she returned in 1997 as Blonde. In Paris, Hartelius sang "Les Indes galantes" with William Christie, and Servilia and Adele. She was Konstanze in Zurich, Zerlina at Glyndebourne, and Susanna at the Aix-en-Provence Festival. Further engagements in leading high soprano roles in prestigious venues in Europe have followed. THE MUSIC: "La finta semplice" K. 51 (46a) is an opera buffa composed in 1768 by a 12-year-old Mozart while he and his father Leopold were spending the year in Vienna. Due to court intrigues it was not performed there, but premiered in Salzburg the following year. After that, it was over 200 years until another staged performance, in Salzburg in 2006. The leading soprano role of Rosina has the exquisite aria, "Amoretti, che ascosi qui siete," that was described by one music critic (rightly, I’d argue) as having a "nobility of utterance" and "achieving the expressive intensity of the later Mozart." Which is certainly the case in this stunning floated rendition by Hartelius.
Marvis Martin Theodor Guschlbauer 1983
From Act I of Mozart's opera "Mitridate, re di Ponto", here is soprano Marvis Martin singing Ismene's aria with conductor Theodor Guschlbauer and the musicians at the 1983 Aix-en-Provence Festival. And here's a link to my Marvis Martin playlist: (http•••)
Bruna Rizzoli Rossini Barber Haydn Maria Callas Scala 1816 1925 1949 1959 1960 1961 1962
THE SONGBIRD: Bruna Rizzoli was born in Bologna in 1925. She completed her studies with Maria Pediconi in Rome in 1949 and won the Spoleto Singing Competition, which led to her debut there as Amina. She won other prizes and sang in Bologna, Cagliari, and Rome. In 1959 she appeared at the Aix-en-Provence Festival in Haydn's "Il mondo della luna." In 1961 she was Glauce to Maria Callas’s Medea at La Scala and in 1962 was Eva in “Meistersinger" in Turin. She made several recordings including Musetta, Norina, Lauretta, and Butterfly. THE MUSIC: Rossini's "The Barber of Seville" is one of the most popular operas in the world and has been since soon after its premiere in Rome in 1816. It is based on the first of three plays by Pierre Beaumarchais about Figaro, the clever barber in the title. The music of the opera is believed to have been composed in about three weeks. This showy aria "Una voce poco fa" introduces the clever character of Rosina in Act One and has become a touchstone for florid sopranos and mezzos.
Quatuor Van Kuijk Kuijk Forge Wigmore Hall 1772 1782 2012 2015 2017
Buy here: (http•••) Despite its Dutch-sounding name, the quartet founded by Nicolas Van Kuijk in 2012 is French. But its short career is already international. The Quatuor Van Kuijk won First Prize in the 2015 Wigmore Hall Competition and First Prize and Audience Award at the Trondheim International Chamber Competition, and its members have been named BBC New Generation Artists until 2017. It has also been distinguished by the Academy of the Festival d’Aix-en-Provence, and it is in the framework of the latter’s partnership with Alpha Classics that it has recorded this programme. Mozart is obviously the ideal composer to forge a link between chamber music and opera, the raison d’être of the Aix Festival. This programme combines an impish divertimento by the youthful Mozart of 1772 with two mature quartets composed around 1782, including the famous ‘Dissonance’ Quartet with its eminently dramatic opening. Nowhere else in Mozart’s quartets do theatre and counterpoint form such a happy pairing. Praised by The Guardian for its ‘style, energy, and a sense of risk’, the QVK is one of the most promising chamber groups of the new generation. Alpha is proud to accompany it for several recording projects.
