Severe Janacek Brno Philharmonic Orchestra 1927 1979
I post this recording as a memory of Czech composer Jan Duchaň. This must be one of my first performances with an orchestra? I did not remember it myself, until recently, when my student from the Summer Academy in Telc ( now a shining star - Pavel Čadek ) provided me with a privat recording, that he has got from his cello teacher, Magda Kolácková Duchaňová ( the composers wife) . I was gladly surpriced to hear it, as this concerto is actually very beautiful. Also the quality of this recording is suprasingly ok for a private tape recording from 79. And as for my own playing... I have only played cello 5 - 6 years by that time, as I started so late , but it is already very much ' me' and I ask myself, did I develop at all? Hopefully, smile..... Now for the concert and the protagonists. JUDR. Jan Duchaň ( born 1927) was actually my professor of harmony and kontrapunkt at the music Conservatory in Brno. As I remember, he was one of those componists unliked by the communist regime. Brilliant intelligent man, as a teacher demanding and rather severe. We woudl take his lessons and exams with great respect and some fear - at least in my case. But what I learned in his lessons, I still remember. I was searching internet to find some more facts about him, and I was shocked. There was nothing to find, not even the year of his passing, which must have been decades ago, not one single photo. Just few works mentioned on some database and perhaps a book on Amazon? I can not be sure, that is written by him, though the title could indicate it, as it is called Einsteins Mozart. It was a sad finding to see him so totaly forgotten. But such must have been destinies of many, who seemed so significant at their time and who did not live in the days of internet era, that provides at least an illusion of personal eternity. Smile. Strange, that it should be me, who brings Jan Duchaň to life again. To be honest, we did not have much of a connection other than respect from my side. But hearing his Concerto now, I think it deserves to have a life and Jan Duchaň a recognition as a composer. How comes I played this piece? I was asked by my dear cello teacher Bedrich Havlik to learn it and perform it with the Conservatory Orchestra under Dr. Zbynek Mrkos, who was a great personality of the musical life in Brno those days, conducting, teaching , leading choirs. Both doctors, Mrkos and Duchaň had very similar energy and were marcant unmissable personalities. I was not much at ease with those 2 sharp severe gentlemen, but who would be as an insecure teenager? I remember actually, that when I was given this task, I was not too keen to learn it, I woudl rather play Dvorak , smile, but see how life works. The world premiere of this piece took place in Besedni dum, a wonderful hall in the middle of Brno city and a home for the Brno Philharmonic Orchestra. It was a big event as a special Anniversary concert, celebrating 60 years of the Brno Conservatory, a school established by no one less remarkable then Leos Janacek! The orchestra' name was Moravský komorní orchestr, consisting mostly og conservatory students. It struggles some places with this piece, but remember please, that Conservatory in Czechoslovakia is unlike many other countries not the highest musical education, but comes after primary shool, usually attended by children aged 15. It takes 4 to 6 years study to accomplish it by graduation exams. Only later comes Academy as the highest education. I hope many will find this interesting and I am certainly glad, that Jan Duchaňs name and music can get some well deserved attention.
