operaphila.org - After three productions were cancelled in the first pandemic year, mezzo-soprano Nikola Printz and composer Erling Wold decided to produce three short operatic films in three styles - three responses to danger, each with its own approach to voice and visuals. Opera on Film, presented from Tuesday, Sept. 27 through Sunday, Oct. 2, is a big-screen binge of the operatic art form’s cinematic possibilities, gathering both feature-length and short-form films. Audiences can enjoy the entire series for just $25 with an Opera on Film badge. Festival packages, film badges, and performance tickets are now on sale at operaphila.org. Tickets for individual film screenings will go on sale through the Philadelphia Film Center box office in September.

Michael Gormley organist of Christ Church Cathedral Victoria, BC. This is an unreleased test recording that was recorded (to check the levels and the sound set-up) in an the empty Cathedral in around 2005-06 for a radio program. Christ Church Cathedral Victoria, BC, is a very large building, and the recording equipment was set up in the middle of the nave. This is an ideal place to hear/record the large organ, that "speaks" from high up in the west gallery above the west end of the church, above the narthex. The reason this is an ideal location, is that it allows the lower frequencies to propagate as they should, since the low bass sound waves from the two 32ft (pitch) stops, can fully "resolve", In simple language: sound great! The music is the last two thirds of Cesar Franck's "Chorale #3 in A minor" (from the "oboe" stop solo part). This is classic romantic French organ music from the late 19th century. For the average listener it means that is is quite dramatic, and in many places will show off the full organ to spectacular effect (such as: Widor's famous Toccata in F minor). As I said this was a test recording, and the Franck piece here is only the last portion. You will hear it start quietly and gradually build up, until towards the end, when the massive sound of the 32ft stops enter, plus the full organ. These sound waves go down to 16 cycles/second. So the bass is quite spectacular, There's no mistaking when they come in either (at around 4:30). NOTE: please be aware that this is a test recording for a sound level check, and should in NO WAY be considered a finished performance. It is a credit to the skill of the cathedral organist Michael Gormley that he just took out the score and played for the recording crew. I was lucky, because I was helping at the time, and was by the organ console, (score) page turning for the organist. It was quite an experience! The organ is the "tracker" 4 manual/keyboard plus pedal board. Built by Hellmuth Wold Wolff/Opus 47/2005. It is the largest organ this late great man ever built.
