Giuseppe Verdi LA FORZA DEL DESTINO Opera in 4 acts (sung in Italian with Lithuanian and English surtitles) Conductor Gintaras Rinkevičius Director Dalia Ibelhauptaitė Set Designer Giles Cadle (UK) Costume Designer Juozas Statkevičius Lighting Designer Mimi Jordan Sherin (USA) Choreographer Arthur Pita (UK) Chorus Master Česlovas Radžiūnas Premiere: 8 April 2005 Verdi composed "La Forza del destino" in 1862 by a commission from St. Petersburg Imperial Theatre. Premiered at the Teatro alla Scala, Milan, in 1869, the revised version earned the opera unfailing success. Rarely mounted on stage, this large-scale opera is nevertheless pretty well known to many for some immensely popular numbers performed separately-- the overture, Leonora's aria and others. The LNOBT production of "La Forza" renders a magnificent spectacle. Stage settings are fully changed 6 times. Crowd scenes involve a full 140 artists / soloists, chorus singers, dancers, mime artists, fencers, etc. The leading roles were created by the company's primes, Sigutė Stonytė, Sandra Janušaite, Vytautas Kurnickas, Vytautas Juozapaitis, Dainius Stumbras, Inesa Linaburgytė, Laima Jonutytė, Vladimiras Prudnikovas, Vytautas Bakula and others. This vibrant new production has been directed by the innovative British-based Lithuanian director Dalia Ibelhauptaitė, who returned to LNOBT following her celebrated "Un ballo in maschera". Ms. Ibelhauptaitė employs her inventor's eye ingeniously, whisking the audience back to dark and brutal times where revenge, honour and passion are the driving forces in a world ravaged by war and corrupted morals, where religion, self-sacrifice and flight can no longer bring peace to troubled souls. La forza del destino has brought together British set designer Giles Cadle, one of the most acclaimed American lighting designers, Mimi Jordan Sherin, Lithuanian-born, Paris-based fashion designer Juozas Statkevičius, South African-born choreographer Arthur Pita and the renowned Lithuanian conductor Gintaras Rinkevičius, musical director of Malmo Opera and Music Theatre, Sweden, who collaborated with Ms. Ibelhauptaitė in "Un ballo in maschera".
