Tranchell Hardy Howland 1964 1984 2015
Chris Tranchell, Lionel Morton, and Jane Hardy (making her debut, it seems) introduce us to Bertie the Rabbit, tell us the story of Uncle Fred the Parrot, and teach us about sheep and their lambs in this animal-themed episode. This was originally broadcast on Wednesday, 11th January, 1984, at 15.55, and repeated a week later on 18th January at 10.30 - and before we go any further, I don't *think* it's a lost episode, but I'd be very grateful if anyone can confirm either way for certain. Anyway, look out for a fun game involving drawing without looking, a song about cockatoos, how to make pretend fish and their tank out of a shoe box and shiny sweet wrappers, plus a great pun-tastic little ditty about dancing fish. This actually got its first airing on sister show Play Away a couple of years earlier: (http•••) And, speaking of which, this Play School comes just after the big move to BBC1 and associated revamp, and as such looks to me to be a little too keen to ape its own spin-off. Of course, many of the same production team worked on both, so that's not difficult to understand - but what's with this new-fangled opening sequence? How long was that theme tune used? And where, in the name of all things sane and human, are Big Ted, Little Ted, Jemima and Humpty?! I can't find out a great deal about Jane Hardy, but I can tell you that Chris Tranchell has been in Doctor Who a number of times, including as recently as 2015. Lionel Morton, meanwhile, was the lead singer of The Four Pennies, who had a number one hit with Juliet back in 1964. Pianist Michael Omer seems to still be going very strong in the television composition field, but I'm not sure about drummer Peter Howland - perhaps someone can help fill in the blanks. Many thanks to Lee for providing this recording. (To the best of my knowledge, the contents of this video have never been available commercially anywhere in the world. Peter Tranchell 1922 1953 1993
Score: (http•••) NB this is a computerised performance, by MuseScore 3 notation software, using its default sound font. Music typesetting by John Gwinnell (printed score) and Crispin Flower (preparation for recording). The piano sound is rather harsh, and the performance lacks the expression that real performers would bring. It also uses the exact tempo markings, while real performance would tend to relax these where appropriate. Four pieces for pianoforte & four hands, by Peter Tranchell (1922 – 1993). Composed in May 1953. I : Tempo di Turkey-Trot @ 0:00 II : Rumboid @ 2:02 III : Valse d’Ivresse @ 4:15 IV : Pas à quatre mains gauches @ 6:15 The score includes the instruction "The players should for the most part use the lightest possible touch."
