Arvo Pärt Bruno Lukk 1958 1959
2 Sonatinas for solo piano by the Estonian composer Arvo Pärt is a set of works written during his first year as a student at Tallinn Conservatory. The work employs a neoclassical style popular among young Estonian composers during the time, and it stylistically contrasts with Pärt’s later compositions. Professor Bruno Lukk, the dedicatee of Pärt's first three early compositions and an early major promoter of Pärt's music, premiered the work. Both Sonatinas use a mixture of polyphonic and homophonic devices, with the first movements of each beginning with vaguely fugal voicings. A range of textures are employed, from rapid, nimble runs to clunky, percussive chords. The first Sonatina consists of two movements, while the second has three. The first movement’s main theme revolves around a fast passage that leads to the second theme, an imperious march. The second movement of the first Sonatina (Larghetto) forms a loose set of variations around a theme, and the first movement (Allegro) reprises thereafter. In the second Sonatina, the first movement also maintains a quick pace like the first Sonatina. A free-meter cadenzal passage appears twice in the piece. The second movement forms a proper slow movement, and the third, a rondo, restores the first movement’s speed.
