Nellie du Toit singing "In quelle trine morbide" Manon Lescaut by Puccini Conductor: János Ács Recorded: 8 July 1986 at the Pretoria State Theatre Petronella (Nellie) du Toit was born on 17 December 1929 in Pietersburg, Transvaal and died on 29 July 2018. Nellie was a South African lyrical soprano. She passed away on 29 July 2018 after suffering from pneumonia for a while. From her mother, who herself was very musical, she received her first instruction in singing and music. After matric she enrolled at the South African College of Music in Cape Town and was further taught by Adelheid Armhold and Gregorio Fiasconaro. At the end of 1952 she received the Diploma in Opera with distinction and left for London the following year, where she continued her studies under Tatiana Makushina, as well as playing roles in Le Nozze di Figaro and La Cenerentola for the English National Opera. After returning to South Africa, she embarked on a tour of the country with the famous tenor Marcel Mittrisch with a view to obtaining a licentiate in singing. She continued her studies at the University of South Africa. Based on her performance in this study, she received a Unisa scholarship, which enabled her to study abroad again - this time in Vienna under Maria Hittorff. Upon her return, she was actively involved in opera performances throughout South Africa. She has already been awarded the Nederburg Opera Prize three times - the last time for her portrayal of Tosca in a production of SUKOVS. This award is also an indication of her mastery of dramatic roles. The title role in Madame Butterfly can be regarded as her hallmark. Her stunning portrayal of Lucia in Lucia di Lammermoor was regarded as a mile stone in South African opera history, as was her interpretation of Jenůfa. She was also hailed as a Mozart singer. Highlights in her career were her participation in the premiere of Henk Badings' radio opera Asterion (N.P. van Wyk Louw, 1958) and in 1970 in the Ballad of the Bloodthirsty Hunter (G.A. Watermeyer) by the same composer. In 1972, she finished sixth in the Madame Butterfly competition in Japan. She has sung several opera roles repeatedly, for example Madama Butterfly, which she has sung more than a hundred times, La Bohème (Mimi), La Traviata (Violetta), Lucia di Lammermoor (Lucia) and Norma (Norma). Du Toit gave numerous recitals of classical and light classical music, regularly sang in orchestral concerts and oratorio and was active as broadcasting artist. Her work as voice teacher always ran parallel to her singing activities. Her academic career at the Universities at Stellenbosch and Cape Town spanned fourteen years: from 1980 to 1993. Nellie du Toit’s achievements in music were laureated with the Medal of Honour from the Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1986 and an Honorary Doctorate from the University of Stellenbosch in 1998. Du Toit sang in forty-five opera seasons for the Provincial Arts Councils in the seventeen years between 1963 and 1979, when her opera career ended. In 1986 she returned to the opera stage as the Marschallin in Der Rosenkavalier by Richard Strauss. This was also her final farewell as opera singer.

IT’S PANTO TIME AGAIN AT JOBURG THEATRE Joburg Theatre and Bernard Jay present Janice Honeyman’s Snow White, The Fairest Panto in All The Land, opening on The Mandela Stage at Joburg Theatre on November 3rd and running until December 23rd! “It’s panto-time again! Music, dancing, sensational sparkly sets and a super story, jokes, laughter and ‘happy-ever-after’”, declares Janice Honeyman. “And this year it’s back to my very first panto ever, Snow White. It has always been a great favourite of mine! Why? Because it’s sweet and sad, romantic, rollicking, funny, and full of fantasy. We have a kind, loveable heroine, a handsome, hunky prince, seven cute dwarfs, a magic mirror and of course the ultimate example of Evil – the wicked Queen Hildegonda. And then, as always, there are all sorts of sensational surprises – I’m not saying what they are – you must come and discover them for yourselves!” South African movie, television, stage and comedy star Desmond Dube returns to his sixth Joburg Theatre pantomime, playing the comic role of Dame Dolla Diddledaddledoodledragon, having become one of Joburg audiences’ most loved panto stars. Desmond is best known for his movies Hotel Rwanda and Hopeville, the TV series No.1 Ladies’ Detective Agency, Friends Indeed and Suburban Bliss and, of course, his roles in the Amaglugglug and Clientele Life commercials. Legendary 702 talk radio show host and international champion rugby player John Robbie makes his pantomime debut in Snow White as The Major-Dumb-Ou of the Royal Palace of Cool Cornucopia. John recently retired after thirty years on 702, having built an unrivalled reputation on air for professionalism, integrity and fairness. Ben Voss is a comedian, actor and playwright, best known for his portrayal of the fictional South African businesswoman, Beauty Ramapelepele, using the alter ego of Beauty to deliver satirical social commentary. In Snow White, Ben will play the role of the Wicked Queen Hildegonda Hoggenham. Ben set up the production company Mamba Productions together with John van de Ruit and they have produced and performed the comedy skit shows Green Mamba and Black Mamba across the country and in London. Snow White also features two of South Africa’s most highly acclaimed rising theatre stars, Kiruna-Lind Devar (Sweet Charity, Saturday Night Fever, Evita) as the Princess and Tshepo Ncokoane (Janice Honeyman’s Sleeping Beauty, Priscilla, The Color Purple) as Prince Chuck B Charming.
