Settimia Caccini Caccini Lobkowicz Johannette Zomer Alessandro Ghivizzani 1150 1591 1638 1950 1987
Buy the PDF score here: (http•••) Composed by Settimia Caccini +••.••(...)). From Ariette in musica da diversi maestri, Lobkowicz Music Collection, MS II La 2, f.10-11. Johannette Zomer, soprano La Primavera “Many women who were well known as singers are reported to have composed music for their own use, though much of it may never have been written down. (…) others include Settimia Caccini, who, according to Jacopo Cicognini (…) composed some of the pieces she sang upon that occasion: ‘The music of the above-mentioned was composed by the same women who sang them: (…) the second with supreme delicacy by Signora Settimia (…) being daughter of that renowned Giulio Romano.’ Several pieces with basso continuo by Settimia Caccini, in fact, have been preserved in two related manuscripts,” along with works by her husband Alessandro Ghivizzani.” - Jane Bowers, Women Making Music: The Western Art Tradition 1150-1950, 1987
Nikolaus Kraft Umlauf Liška Esterházy Lobkowicz Schuppanzigh Jean Louis Duport Paganini 1778 1796 1801 1814 1834 1837 1853
1.Polonaise for Cello and Orchestra, Op. 2 00:00 Original title: Polonaise pour le Violoncelle accompagné de deux Violons, Alto, Basso, Flute, 2 Hautbois, 2 Cors, Basson, 2 Trompettes a Timbales, composée et dédiée a son ami Umlauf, par N. Kraft 2.Bolero for Cello and Orchestra, Op. 6 09:48 Original title: Nicolaus Kraft: Bolero pour le Violoncelle avec accompagnement de 2 Violons, Viola, Flute, 2 Cors, Violoncelle et Basse, composée par N. Kraft, Op. 6; Grave, Allegretto Jiří Hošek (cello), Plzeň Radio Symphony Orchestra, Jiří Štrunc, conductor (1), Bohumir Liška, conductor (2) “NIKOLAUS KRAFT was born at Eszterháza (Esterházy?) in Hungary on 14 December 1778, while his father was a member of the local orchestra. Prince Esterhazy himself acted as the boy's godfather. From a tender age his father taught him music, and at the age of four the boy began to play the viola holding it between his knees like a cello. At the age of six he made his appearance at a concert for the aristocratic society when he played a short piece for cello which his father had composed for the occasion. Two years later he accompanied his father on a concert tour of Europe and won the admiration of his audiences. In compliance with his father's wishes, he first devoted more time to acquiring a general education rather than exclusively to practising the cello. But as from the age of eighteen he devoted himself entirely to music. In 1796 he joined the Lobkowicz orchestra, and he may have stood in for his father in the Schuppanzigh Quartet. In Janu-ary 1801 Prince Lobkowicz sent the young Kraft at his own expense to Berlin, to the famous cellist Jean Louis Duport, to advance his education. After one year Nikolaus Kraft became the solo cellist at the opera house in Vienna and began to undertake concert tours. Subsequently, for a full twenty years +••.••(...)) he held the position of the leader of the orchestra of the Opera House in Stuttgart. In December 1834, while tuning his cello he injured his finger; the damage proved permanent and he was forced to give up playing. Nikolaus Kraft retired and stayed in Stuttgart until 1837. Then he moved to Bohemia, where he died in Cheb at the age of 75 on 18 May 1853. Nicolaus Kraft left a legacy of seventeen works, most of them for the cello. While the father developed in a classicist environment, the son's orientation was towards the romantics. In many respects his works resemble those of Paganini, both with regard to the melodies and the virtuoso techniques (e.g. his six concertos for cello and orchestra and his duets for two cellos). As a personality, too, Nikolaus Kraft had much in common with Paganini as composer and virtuoso.” (Author: Jiří Hošek, Album Notes)
