THE SONGBIRD: Gianna Rolandi passed away at age 68 on June 20. As a tribute, I'm taking a short break from Mozart to post selections of her artistry that are not already on YouTube. I realized this morning that I had posted her second aria from "Barber of Seville" back in February, but never shared her "Una voce poco fa" (Doh!) / so here it is (with a staccato High F in the flourish before the final verse). Rolandi +••.••(...)) was a leading coloratura soprano at the New York City Opera in the 1970s and 1980s / she made her debut there as Olympia in "Tales of Hoffmann" in 1975 right after graduating from the Curtis Institute and basically stayed on the roster for 15 years in over 30 roles. (You can hear her NYCO debut performances and others on my channel). She was a Met Auditions finalist in 1974 and sang several seasons at The Met (Sophie, Olympia, Rossignol, and Zerbinetta), as well as making many appearances around the U.S. I heard her in San Diego as Ophelia in 1983 and met her backstage! Rolandi also made select guest performances at major venues and festivals abroad before she retired from singing in 1994 at the age of 42. THE MUSIC: Rossini's "The Barber of Seville" is one of the most popular operas in the world and has been since soon after its premiere in Rome in 1816. It is based on the first of three plays by Pierre Beaumarchais about Figaro, the clever barber in the title. The music of the opera is believed to have been composed in about three weeks. Rosina's first aria "Una voce poco fa" is surely one of the most regularly performed and recorded arias in all of opera, partly since the role is shared by both sopranos and mezzos.
Rossini Gianna Rolandi New York City Opera
This is a tour de force performance of the often cut aria "Sventurata, mi credea" by the great Gianna Rolandi from the televised performance of November 6,1980. In this production of Cinderella, it was performed in English by the New York City Opera. Rolandi had a wonderful career, but if she needed to be remembered for just one performance, I would nominate this one! The video quality is slightly better now and the color has been finally corrected.

~The "Glass Shatterers!" series focuses on sopranos who sustain High F, or sing higher. THE MUSIC: Reinhold Glière's "Concerto for Soprano and Orchestra" (Op. 82) was published in 1943, dedicated to the beloved Russian coloratura soprano Deborah Pantofel-Nechetskaya. (Did she record it? I've never seen one from her). Gliere was born in Kyiv, Ukraine in 1875. It's a grand, slightly schmaltzy concert vocalise for coloratura soprano in two movements: a lush, lyric adagio section followed by an ornate, warbling allegro. It is in the key of F-minor and although a High F is not written into the final measures of score, after 12+ minutes of elaborate vocal gymnastics, it feels like it really should culminate on the high tonic peak. Of the 24 recordings I have, half are able to satisfy the listeners' yearnings by jumping to the F6; the other half decide to pass. Here are 8 sopranos who dared the F / and all but Miroshnichenko did so in live or radio broadcast performances (none of these were found on YT at the time of this posting). Other divas who sing the F are already on YT (Gruberova, Hulse, Dessay, and Munger) so seek out those full performances on your own as I do not typically post material that is already available. I include about the last two minutes for each of these songbirds. Who's your favorite? 1. Ilse Hollweg +••.••(...)) 2. Eugenia Miroshnichenko +••.••(...)) 3. Marianne Blok +••.••(...)) 4.
