Violin Concerto No. 2 in B minor, Op. 27 I. Allegro con fuoco 0:00 II. Andante con moto 8:35 III. Allegro molto vivace 14:41 Kai Laursen, violin South Jutland Symphony Orchestra Carl von Garaguly, conductor Gustav Helsted was a Danish organist and composer. He was the son of composer Carl Helsted , brother of the painter Viggo Helsted and nephew of composer Edvard Helsted. He began studying music at the age of 22. In the years 1879-1882 he studied at the Royal Danish Academy of Music including Niels W. Gade, Johan Christian Gebauer, JPE Hartmann, and Gottfred Matthison-Hansen as his teachers. In 1885, he received the Anchor Legacy and went on a study trip to Germany, France and Italy. In the years 1888-1889 he was Director of the Royal Danish Theater, from 1891-1915 he was organist at the Jesus Church, from 1892 he was a teacher of music theory, and from 1904 professor of organ at the Conservatory of Music. In 1915 he became the organist at Our Lady Church, the country's most distinguished. As an organist at the Jesus Church, and inspired by Gottfred Matthison-Hansen, he held a number of well-attended "organ lectures" (concerts) where he played not only Händel, Bach, and other deceased composers, but also the music by French and Belgian organists of the time, such as César Franck. A large number of his compositions were premiered by the Danish Concert Association, of which he was a co-founder (1901), for many years chairman, and whose concerts he occasionally directed. He was also among the founders of the chamber music association Symphonia in 1889 (together with, among others, Carl Nielsen and Louis Glass) and the Danish Tonekunstnerforening (1903) and sat from 1907 on the organization's Society for the Publishing of Danish music. In 1917 he became Knight of Dannebrog. He is buried at Holmen Cemetery.
