Vagn Holmboe Gilbert Jespersen Bloch Christiansen Lund Carl Nielsen Danish Quartet 1909 1940 1950 1996
Vagn Holmboe: Serenata, Op. 18 (1940) The Danish Quartet: Gilbert Jespersen, flute Erling Bloch, violin Asger Christiansen, cello Lund Christiansen, piano Recorded in the spring of 1950 in Copenhagen, Denmark, on Gramophone Company 78-rpm matrices 2CS-2810 and 2CS-2811, and released as HMV DB 5297. Holmboe +••.••(...)) is considered the most eminent Danish symphonist since Carl Nielsen, with thirteen to his credit, as well as 20 string quartets, many concertos (some for unusual instruments, such as tuba), and much chamber music. His works have been fairly widely disseminated by recordings in recent years, but this Serenata does not appear to have ever been published, or recorded since this pioneering effort, one of the earliest recordings of Holmboe's music. The Serenata is in three movements: 1. Allegro animato 2. Adagio (at 2:55) 3. Presto (at 5:32)
