John Scott Hollywood Chamber Orchestra 1100 1929 1997
ABOUT THE SCORE: “Beneath the Mirror of Lake Baikal” was completed several months after Jacques Cousteau’s death in 1997, and was originally set to employ tracked music written for previous documentaries due to financial hardships surrounding the Cousteau Society at that time. John Scott, feeling he owed much of his creative growth over the years to his enduring friendship and collaboration with the late documentarian, stepped up to the plate and offered to self-finance one final documentary score - and even incurred the expense of hiring union musicians in Los Angeles to carry out the recording. The resultant score, for a chamber-sized ensemble of strings, horns, flute, guitar, harp and balalaika (for local Russian flavoring), is an absolute delight, and manages to both sit comfortably in the larger canon of scores Scott penned for Cousteau while also sounding totally new and fresh to his catalog. The main theme for the lake itself - the largest and deepest in the world - is introduced at the onset on balalaika beneath strumming guitar, and is an absolute ear worm; its subsequent harmonic development on strings, horns and cadenza-like flute runs are 100% John Scott musical exposition of the most satisfying variety. Rather than penning music bespoke of the grandeur of the lake, Scott instead chooses to bring the music down-to-earth with an emphasis on creating folksy atmosphere. The score is largely built around variations on this main idea, though Scott being the type of composer he is, the variations are always fresh and stagnation never threatens the short, 26-odd minutes of scoring in the episode. At 3:00 a horn intones the secondary theme of the episode beneath a driving bed of strings; this melody is, in fact, reused from one of Scott’s most impressive singular pieces: “Dominion of the Blue Whale”, a rousing and evocative 9-minute showstopper Scott had penned for the ill-fated ‘Parc Oceanique’ attraction Cousteau was involved with in the late 80’s. This was one of Cousteau’s personal favorite melodies that Scott ever wrote for him, and its use here a decade later is a tribute to the late explorer. Heard again at 9:41 on low, warm strings, the theme returns for the finale with full strings (take note of 19:29 - listen to the way flute and horn weave around the melody on celli - sublimely beautiful and simple), before a short end title gently recapitulates the main theme on balalaika to provide a reflective coda. Elsewhere a more overtly ‘Russian’ character is employed via a gypsy-like bustling atmosphere, such as at 11:00. The music never sound like pastiche, and the very small forces employed (around 20-25 musicians) never feel limited thanks to Scott’s unerring ear for timbre and orchestrational creativity. This is tuneful, evocative scoring of the high standard Scott usually delivers, whether he has 100 musicians at his disposal or only a quarter of those forces. The composer later reworked portions of this score into a twenty-minute chamber suite for string quartet, flute and guitar, which I have a live recording of and will eventually upload also. The “Dominion of the Blue Whale” melody would end up making one further cameo in a concert work John wrote for narrator and orchestra dedicated to Cousteau, “L'Homme Que S'en Vola” (recorded in France with Charlotte Rampling providing the narration). ABOUT THIS RECORDING: This score was recorded in a single short session with AFM musicians in a small church (!!!) near Universal Studios - almost within walking distance of the composer’s home in the Hollywood Hills - and while a release was prepared and a CD mastered for JOS Records, the planned album never materialized. This upload is derived from that album master provided generously by the composer himself and is otherwise not available in any format. DISCLAIMER: I do not own the music included in my channel and make no claims as such. All videos have been uploaded for EDUCATIONAL purposes only to make the public aware of obscure and forgotten works by deserving composers who would otherwise find no online audience whatsoever. Please purchase the music on CD or via digital retailers or streamers whenever possible!
