Capella Torre Torre Josquin Desprez Gaude Cabezón Japart Petrucci Tivolivredenburg 1492 1495 1502 2018
Vocal ensemble Cantar Lontano, led by Marco Mencoboni, and musical ensemble Capella de la Torre, led by Katharina Bäuml, perform missas by Josquin Desprez during the Early Music Festival Utrecht 2018. The musical program ♫ Anonymous: Instrumental procession ♫ Gregorian: Adeamus cum fiducia ♫ Morton: Lomme armé ♫ Josquin: Missa L’homme armé super voces musicales (Kyrie, Gloria) ♫ Josquin: Gaude virgo mater Christi ♫ Josquin: Benedicta es caelorum regina ♫ Josquin: Missa L’homme armé super voces musicales (Credo) ♫ Morton: Il sera pour vous / Lomme armé ♫ Josquin: Ave Maria ♫ Anonymous: Cantus firmus L’homme armé ♫ Josquin: Missa L’homme armé super voces musicales (Sanctus-Benedictus) ♫ De Cabezón: Misa L’homme armé glosado (Osanna) ♫ Josquin: Missa L’homme armé super voces musicales (Agnus Dei) ♫ Japart: Il est de bonne heure né / L’homme armé ♫ Gregorian: Dixit Jesus matri suae Recording: Sunday the 26th of August 2018, in TivoliVredenburg Utrecht. The 'Missa L’homme armé super voces musicales' is the first of two settings of the ordinary of the mass by Josquin Desprez, using the famous 'L’homme armé' tune as their cantus firmus source material. The earliest source containing the mass is the Vatican manuscript CS 197 (ca. 1492-1495) and our work is based on that score. In Rome inside the Papal circle instruments were almost forbidden. However, the earliest print of masses, in Petrucci’s Misse Josquin of 1502, points to a wider dissemination. The mass was probably performed not only in Rome, but also in quite different places and at different times, and was also adapted for instruments.
