Malin Hartelius Margarethe Bence William Christie Vienna State Opera 1768 1966 1989 1991 1992 1997 2006
THE SONGBIRD: Born in 1966 in Malmo, Malin Hartelius studied music in Vienna with soprano Margarethe Bence. In 1989, she became a member of the Vienna State Opera Studio, appearing as Celia (Lucio Silla) and Papagena. in 1991 she became a member of the Zürich Opera and sang Pamina, Adele, Blonde, and Ännchen. Her Salzburg debut in 1992 was Barbarina; she returned in 1997 as Blonde. In Paris, Hartelius sang "Les Indes galantes" with William Christie, and Servilia and Adele. She was Konstanze in Zurich, Zerlina at Glyndebourne, and Susanna at the Aix-en-Provence Festival. Further engagements in leading high soprano roles in prestigious venues in Europe have followed. THE MUSIC: "La finta semplice" K. 51 (46a) is an opera buffa composed in 1768 by a 12-year-old Mozart while he and his father Leopold were spending the year in Vienna. Due to court intrigues it was not performed there, but premiered in Salzburg the following year. After that, it was over 200 years until another staged performance, in Salzburg in 2006. The leading soprano role of Rosina has the exquisite aria, "Amoretti, che ascosi qui siete," that was described by one music critic (rightly, I’d argue) as having a "nobility of utterance" and "achieving the expressive intensity of the later Mozart." Which is certainly the case in this stunning floated rendition by Hartelius.
Anton Cajetan Adlgasser Moretto Johann Ernst Eberlin Michael Haydn Haydn Leopold Mozart 1510 1729 1743 1750 1752 1764 1767 1769 1777
A urtext edition is available from Brian Clark @ (http•••) part of a new extensive survey of Adlgasser's symphonies. Be sure to inquire ;) This is the first movement of a three movement symphony. The ensemble performing in this recording is "Orchestra Musica Rara" based in Milan. The conductor is Vanni Moretto. Please visit (http•••) for more information about their concerts and recordings. Anton Cajetan Adlgasser (1 October 1729 / 23 December 1777) was a German organist and composer at Salzburg Cathedral and at court, and composed a good deal of liturgical music (including eight masses and two requiems) as well as oratorios and orchestral and keyboard works. Born in Inzell, Bavaria, he moved to Salzburg, where he studied under Johann Ernst Eberlin. From 1750 he was organist at the Salzburg Cathedral, where he remained the rest of his life. After a visit to Italy in 1764-5 he set Metastasio's La Nitteti (his only opera) performed in Salzburg (1767), and in 1767 he collaborated with Mozart and Michael Haydn on the oratorio Die Schuldigkeit des ersten Gebots. Mozart, who had a high regard for Adlgasser's music, succeeded him as Organist at Salzburg Cathedral in 1777. Adlgasser's first marriage, in 1752, was to Maria Josepha, the daughter of his predecessor, J.E. Eberlin, at Salzburg Cathedral. Four years later he married Maria Barbara Schwab, and in 1769 the court singer Maria Anna Fesemayer +••.••(...)), who sang in Die Schuldigkeit and created the role of Ninetta in La finta semplice. Leopold Mozart stood witness to the third wedding. He died at Salzburg in 1777 of a stroke suffered while playing the organ.

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia: La finta semplice (The Fake Innocent), K. 51 (46a) is an opera buffa in three acts for seven voices and orchestra, composed in 1768 by then 12-year-old Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Young Mozart and his father Leopold were spending the year in Vienna, where Leopold was trying to establish his son as an opera composer. He was acting on a suggested request from the Emperor Joseph II that the young boy should write an opera. Leopold chose an Italian libretto by the Vienna court poet Marco Coltellini, which was based on an early work by Carlo Goldoni. During rehearsals, the opera was the victim of intrigues from competing composers claiming that the work was not from the 12-year-old boy, but from his father. Threatened with a sabotaged first night by the impresario Giuseppe Affligio, Leopold prudently decided to withdraw. The opera was never staged in Vienna. It was performed the following year in Salzburg at the request of the Prince-Archbishop on 1 May 1769. Mozart produced a full score of three acts, 26 numbers, in a manuscript of 558 pages. It includes an overture/Sinfonia, one coro, one duet, three ensembles (at the end of each act), and 21 arias. The opera was recorded in its entirety by Leopold Hager for Orfeo in January 1983 with Helen Donath and Teresa Berganza, a performance lasting two hours 45 minutes. Another recording was made in November 1989, with Barbara Hendricks and Ann Murray, and conducted by Peter Schreier. This version was selected by Philips to be part of The Complete Mozart Edition of all the works of Mozart, published in 1991. However, since its premiere in 1769, the opera was not staged until modern times. It was performed at the 2006 Salzburg festival, as part of the production of all of 22 Mozart's operas. The performances were published in the collection of DVDs known as M-22 by Deutsche Grammophon. (http•••)

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (German: [ˈvɔlfɡaŋ amaˈdeus ˈmoːtsaʁt], English see fn.), name Johannes Chrysostomus Wolfgangus Theophilus Mozart (27 January 1756 / 5 December 1791), was a prolific and influential composer of the Classical era. Mozart showed prodigious ability from his earliest childhood. Already competent on keyboard and violin, he composed from the age of five and performed before European royalty. At 17, he was engaged as a court musician in Salzburg, but grew restless and travelled in search of a better position, always composing abundantly. While visiting Vienna in 1781, he was dismissed from his Salzburg position. He chose to stay in the capital, where he achieved fame but little financial security. During his final years in Vienna, he composed many of his best-known symphonies, concertos, and operas, and portions of the Requiem, which was largely unfinished at the time of his death. The circumstances of his early death have been much mythologized. He was survived by his wife Constanze and two sons. Mozart learned voraciously from others, and developed a brilliance and maturity of style that encompassed the light and graceful along with the dark and passionate. He composed over 600 works, many acknowledged as pinnacles of symphonic, concertante, chamber, operatic, and choral music. He is among the most enduringly popular of classical composers, and his influence on subsequent Western art music is profound; Beethoven composed his own early works in the shadow of Mozart, and Joseph Haydn wrote that "posterity will not see such a talent again in 100 years...
