Rossini Leyla Gencer Renata Scotto Handel Maria Callas Rossini Opera Festival Scala 1814 1950 1954 1955 1992
THE SONGBIRD: Italian soprano Patrizia Biccirè received her diploma in singing from the Conservatorio Rossini in Pesaro and coached with Leyla Gencer and Renata Scotto. Her debut came in 1992 at Peraro's Rossini Opera Festival in "La Scala di Seta." Biccirè has sung in Glyndebourne, Bologna, Lisbon, Bruxelles, Rome, London, Oslo, Madrid, Monaco, Vienna, Geneva, and Seoul. In addition to many Rossini roles, she has sung Oscar, Sandrina, Zerlina, Handel's Armida, Violetta, Gilda, Poppea, Maria Stuarda, and Marguerite. THE MUSIC: Rossini's opera-buffa "Il turco in Italia" premiered at La Scala in 1814. It was revived in Rome in 1950 with Maria Callas, who made a recording of the opera in 1954 and sang it again at La Scala in 1955. The plot is full of flirting, deceptions, and mistaken identities, that all come rapidly to a happy ending. Fiorilla sings two arias: the first is the brief happy-go-lucky cavatina that introduces her in the opera, "No si dà follie maggiore." Her longer bravura aria "Squallida veste, e bruna" comes near the end of the opera when she is in despair at how she has lost her honor and husband.
