"O lieb, so lang du lieben kannst" (Love as long as love you can) is an 1829 poem by the 19th-century German writer Ferdinand Freiligrath. Hungarian composer Franz Liszt set the first four verses in 1845 to music (soprano voice and piano), and later adapted it into the third of his Liebesträume (Dreams of Love). Liebesträume (German for "Dreams of Love", in italian "Sogno d'amore") is a set of three solo piano works (S.541/R.211) by Franz Liszt, published in 1850. Originally the three Liebesträume were conceived as lieder after poems by Ludwig Uhland and Ferdinand Freiligrath. In 1850, two versions appeared simultaneously as a set of songs for high voice and piano, and as transcriptions for piano two-hands. Freiligrath's poem for the famous third Notturno is about unconditional mature love ("Love as long as you can!", "O lieb, so lang du lieben kannst"). Liebestraum No. 3 in A-flat major is the last of the three that Liszt wrote and the most popular. It can be considered as split into three sections, each divided by a fast cadenza requiring dexterous finger work and a very high degree of technical ability. The same melody is used throughout the piece, each time varied, especially near the middle of the work, where the climax is reached. In that section, the melody is played by a series of octaves, followed by arpeggios. The tempo indication is "Poco allegro, con affetto". (with affection) and Liszt added also the wording "dolce cantando" (with singing tone). There is also a cnetral part in which the tempo becomes "PIù animato e con passione" (more animated and with passion ) to go back, in the final part, to "Tempo primo" (first tempo) as in the beginning. A child prodigy, Liszt gained renown in Europe during the early nineteenth century for his prodigious virtuosic skill as a pianist. He was a friend, musical promoter and benefactor to many composers of his time, was famous his close association with Frédéric Chopin who once wrote in a letter to a friend " ..Liszt is playing my etudes in another room: I would like to steal his way to perform them....". In 19th century the poet Heinrich Heine coined the term "Lisztomania" the intense fan frenzy directed toward Hungarian composer Franz Liszt during his performances.
