As a change of pace after the foxtrots and the "forgotten singers" the following videos will feature tangos. The well known and popular - and somewhat controversial - bandleader Oskar Joost +••.••(...)) and his orchestra play the beautiful "Tango der Sehnsucht" (Tango of desire). I am not sure if Joost himself was still conducting his orchestra by this time, since he enlisted in the army in January 1940 and was replaced by Rudi Juckeland. Information about Oskar Joost can be found here : in German (http•••) in English (http•••) The video features sequences of German movies made between 1939 and 1941 featuring popular stars such as Marika Rökk, Zarah Leander, Lizzi Waldmüller, Marte Harell, Luise Ullrich, Marianne Hoppe, Margot Hielscher, Hilde Krahl and Ilse Werner... Leander Tchaikowsky Hans Stüwe Leo Slezak 1939
Please activate the HD function(1080p/720p) before watching the video or watch it with a larger type player (in 480p) This video features popular singer Rudi Schuricke who sings his version of Zarah Leander's "Nur nicht aus Liebe weinen" - the Russian song composed for by Theo Mackeben for the 1939 melodrama "Es war eine rauschende Ballnacht" (lit. "It was an enchanted ball night", US release title "The life and loves of Tchaikowsky"). This movie starring Zarah Leander, Marika Rökk, Hans Stüwe and Leo Slezak is a highly romanticised biopic of Russian composer Tchaikowsky. To its credit the movie does not claim to be an exact biography. In the opening credits it is mentioned that the story is fabricated. The movie owes its existence to Tchaikowsky's music and as such is a well crafted dark melodrama in which Leander suffers beautifully. A much smaller part is played by UFA studio's other popular star : Marika Rökk - who is featured as a dancer (Apart from two brief scenes there is no screen time between Leander and Rökk). The lyrics of the song have been adapted to suit a male singer... While it is initially strange to hear Leander's song sung by a man - I rather like this version... Schuricke alos recorded other songs by Zarah Leander, for example "Ich hab vielleicht noch nie geliebt" from her movie "Premiere", "Eine Frau wird erst schön durch die Liebe" and others. The video features images of Zarah Leander as well as the Belgian wartime release poster from my ownl collection. All pictures feature Zarah Leander in costumes from "Es war eine rauschende Ballnacht" as well as a few sequences from the movie. The orchestration is very elaborate and this version features a set of lyrics close to Leander's version.
